VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980) - The hit and run driver who mowed down a tourist last summer will only have to serve 11 months in jail.
The prison term imposed on Xiao Zhang is more than the 10 months sought by the defence, but far less than the 21 months suggested by the Crown.
Zhang took off after striking and killing New Zealand tourist, Dr. David Higgins, last June.
He's also breached his bail conditions twice since the accident, including taking off for Toronto, instead of showing up for his original sentencing date.
In imposing a lower sentence, the judge took into account Zhang's limited mental ability and the fact he pleaded guilty to the charges.
Zhang will also have two years of probation, a five-year driving prohibition, and will have to forfeit his vehicle.
This local story sure has me steamed!

Why was this joker driving in the first place? You would think one's mental capacity should play some role in getting a driver's license to start with! Just like the condition of one's eyes does when you're tested for that. What a bunch of crock!
On top of that, this idiot breached his bail conditions twice since the accident, and he only gets 11 months in jail?
Perhaps with some good behaviour and saying he's really, really sorry for his bad driving he'll get off in a week!
