Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song
B.J. Thomas
________

It's lonely out tonight
And the feelin' just got right for a brand new love song
Somebody done somebody wrong song

Hey, wontcha play another somebody done somebody wrong song
And make me feel at home while I miss my baby, while I miss my baby

So please play for me a sad melody
So sad that it makes everybody cry-y-y-y
A real hurtin' song about a love that's gone wrong
'cause I don't want to cry all alone

Hey, wontcha play another somebody done somebody wrong song
And make me feel at home while I miss my baby, while I miss my baby

(instrumental interlude)

So please play for me a sad melody
So sad that it makes everybody cry-y-y-y
A real hurtin' song about a love that's gone wrong
'cause I don't want to cry all alone

Hey, wontcha play another somebody done somebody wrong song
And make me feel at home while I miss my baby, while I miss my baby

(Hey) wontcha play (wontcha play) another somebody done somebody wrong song
And make me feel at home while I miss my baby, while I miss my baby

(Hey) wontcha play (wontcha play)
another somebody done somebody wrong song
And make me feel at home while I miss my baby, while I miss my baby

Sometimes it is necessary to sit, listen and blubber. What's your favorite "blubbering" song?

"It Hurts Me Too"--Hound Dog Taylor

(If you ever want to figure out where Led Zeppelin found their inspiration, give Hound Dog a listen...)

This Nick Cave tune always gives me the chills:

LONG TIME MAN

Yeah, they came to take me away
Said I'd be sitting here for the rest of my life
But I don't really care - I shot my wife
And brother, I can't even remember the reason why

Oh, it makes a long time man feel bad
Yeah, it makes a long time man feel bad
Well I ain't had no love since I don't know when
It sure makes a long time man feel bad

We was down in Jacksonville
A cold winter night
My baby and I, we began to fight
I heated up, and I grabbed my gun
I get so cold on those nights down south

She was laying in a pool right there on the kitchen floor
She looked up at me and began to smile
Her gasping words: "Baby, I love you"
Then she closed those baby blue eyes

(chorus, and variations)

Sometimes I hear you call my name in the dead of the night

I ain't had those arms around me
I ain't had those lips, those lips, around me

It sure makes a long time man feel bad
So bad

Yeah, Cav. Definitely goose bump material.

Ten years ago, on a cold, dark night
Someone was killed beneath the town hall light
There were few at the scene
But they all agreed
That the slayer who ran
Looked a lot like me

She walks these hills in a Long Black Veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me

The judge said, "Son, what is your alibi?
If you were somewhere else,
Then you won't have to die."
Well, I said not a word
Though it meant my life
For I'd been in the arms
Of my best friend's wife

Oh, she walks these hills in a Long Black Veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me

Oh now, the scaffold was high
Eternity is near
She stood in the crowd
And shed not a tear

Oh, sometimes at night
When the cold winds blow
In a Long Black Veil
She stands over my bones

She walks these hills in a Long Black Veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me

She walks these hills in a Long Black Veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me

Nobody knows but me...

Nobody knows...
Nobody knows...
Nobody knows... but me.

I think Lefty Frezzel(sp) did the original recording.

Both sung by Johnny Cash, writ by I'm-not-sure-who...

Almost borrowed a guitar and sang this one with the gf at a bombastic and humorless feminist open-mic night at a bar in Santa Cruz one night, but, since discretion is the better part of valor, just ordered up another beer...
Quote:
Delia, oh Delia
Delia all my life
If I hadn't shot poor Delia
I'd've had her for my wife
Delia's gone, one more round, Delia's gone

Well, I went up to Memphis
And I met Delia there
Found her in her parlor
And I tied her to her chair
Delia's gone, one more round, Delia's gone

She was low-down and trifling
She was cold and mean
Kind of evil made me want to
Grab my sub-machine
Delia's gone, one more round, Delia's gone

The first time I shot her
I shot her in the side
It was hard to watch her suffer
But with the second shot she died
Delia's gone, one more round, Delia's gone

But jailer, oh jailer
Jailer I can't sleep
'Cause all around my bedside
I hear the patter of Delia's feet
Delia's gone, one more round, Delia's gone

So if you're woman's devilish
You can let her run
Or you can bring her down and do her
Like Delia got done
Delia's gone, one more round, Delia's gone

And on a slightly more humane note, and actually more of a "done somebody right after doing somebody wrong then got done wrong myself" song...

Well my dog died just yesterday and left me all alone.
The finance company dropped by today and repossessed my home.
That's just a drop in the bucket compared to losing you,
And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too.
Got the Down to Seeds and Stems again Blues.

Shocked Letty did what? Uhoh...

Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today, Madam,
Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today,
She's so sorry to be delayed,
But last evening down in Lover's Lane she strayed, Madam,
Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today, madam,

When she woke up and found that her dream of love had gone, Madam,
She ran to the man who led her so far astray,
And from under her velvet gown,
She drew a forty-four pistol,
And she shot that dirty rascal down, Madam,
Now, Old Lady Otis regrets she's disabled and she can't lunch today.

And the moment before she died,
She lifted her lovely head and cried, "Oh, Madam,
Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today."

Do believe someone had some fun with the original words. Laughing

Keep 'em comin', folks...Somehow sad songs ain't bad songs.

When my friends told me you had someone new,
I didn't believe a single word was true
I told them all I had faith in you.
I kept a-right on sayin'

Oh, no, not my baby,
oh no, not my sweet baby.
You're not like all those other girls
who play with the men's hearts like they were toys.

My mama told me, "Son when rumors spread
that there is truth somewhere,
and you should use your head."
But sure didn't listen to what she said,
don't you know I kept a-right on sayin'

Oh, no, not my baby,
oh no, not my sweet baby.

You're not like all those other girls
who lead you on and tell you lies
No, no, my baby

Tell me, baby
I don't believe what they say, no

Oh, no, not my baby,
oh no, not my sweet baby.
Oh, no, not my baby,
oh no, not my sweet baby.
Not my baby, not my baby
Not my baby, not my baby
Not my baby, not my baby
Not my sweet sweet baby,
Not my baby, not my baby
Not my baby, not my baby
Not my baby, not my baby
No way, not my baby
Not my baby, not my baby
not my sweet sweet baby
Oh, no, not my baby,
oh no, not my sweet baby.
Oh, no, not my baby,
oh no, not my sweet baby.
Oh, no, not my baby,
oh no, not my sweet baby.
Oh, no, not my baby,
oh no, not my sweet baby.

This is a stanza from "You Are My Sunshine" that, although not exactly a done-somebody-wrong story, does show a much darker side to the song than we normally think about:

The other night, dear,
When I was sleeping,
I dreamed I held you in my arms.
When I awoke, dear,
I was mistaken,
And I hung my head and cried.

ah, D'art, does that ever bring back memories, old and knew. Smile

I Am A Man Of Constant Sorrow
Norman Blake
(O Brother, Where Art Thou?)

(In constant sorrow through his days )

I am a man of constant sorrow
I've seen trouble all my day.
I bid farewell to old Kentucky
The place where I was born and raised.
(The place where he was born and raised )

For six long years I've been in trouble
No pleasures here on earth I found
For in this world I'm bound to ramble
I have no friends to help me now.

(chorus) He has no friends to help him now

It's fare thee well my old lover
I never expect to see you again
For I'm bound to ride that northern railroad
Perhaps I'll die upon this train.

(chorus) Perhaps he'll die upon this train.

You can bury me in some deep valley
For many years where I may lay
Then you may learn to love another
While I am sleeping in my grave.

(chorus) While he is sleeping in his grave.

Maybe your friends think I'm just a stranger
My face you'll never see no more.
But there is one promise that is given
I'll meet you on God's golden shore.

(chorus) He'll meet you on God's golden shore.

An song of being wronged in an ongoing fashion, as sung by David Allan Coe. (I'm on a country kick today, apparently.)

Quote:
Well it was all that I could do to keep from crying.
Sometimes it seems so useless to remain.
But you don't have to call me darlin', darlin'.
You never even called me by my name.

You don't have to call me Waylon Jennings.
And you don't have to call me Charlie Pride.
And you don't have to call me Merle Haggard anymore,
Even though you're on my fightin' side.

And I'll hang around as long as you will let me.
And I never minded standing in the rain.
But you don't have to call me darlin', darlin'.
You never even called me by my name.

Well I've heard my name a few times in your phone book.
And I've seen it on signs where I've played.
But the only time I know I'll hear David Allan Coe
Is when Jesus has his final Judgement Day.

So, I'll hang around as long as you will let me.
And I never minded standing in the rain.
But you don't have to call me darlin', darlin'.
You never even called me by my name.

(spoken)
Well, a friend of mine named Steve Goodman wrote that song,
and he told me it was the perfect country and western song.
I wrote him back a letter and I told him it was not the
perfect country and western song because he hadn't said
anything at all about momma, or trains, or trucks,
or prison or gettin' drunk. Well, he sat down and
wrote another verse to this song and he sent it to me and
after reading it I realized that my friend had written the
perfect country and western song. And I felt obliged to include
it on this album. The last verse goes like this here:

Well, I was drunk the day my momma got out of prison,
And I went to pick her up in the rain.
But before I could get to the station in my pick-up truck,
She got runned over by a damned old train.

And I'll hang around as long as you will let me.
And I never minded standin' in the rain. Ohhh.
You don't have to call me darlin', darlin'.
You never even called me,
Well I wonder why you don't call me,
Why don't you ever call me by my name?

I love that song, patiodog! Didn't know Coe wrote it. It's got a hook to die for...

Reminds me of a cartoon I used to have on my bulletin board: A guy with his tie loosened and a dazed look on his face in a bar. Caption says, "A broken heart, a bottle of cheap booze, and a country & western juke box. It doesn't get any better than that."

apparently a good friend of coe's named steve goodman wrote it, but it was certainly mr. coe who immortalized it. for my part, i came across it through the gf, who picked it up because it was played incessantly at the coyote ugly before said glorious east village dive bar was immortalized so absurdly in what i hesitate to call "film." best christmas of my life was spent in that bar...

Perhaps it's the color of the sun cut flat
uncovering the cross roads I am standing at.
Or maybe it's the weather or something like that
but babe, you've been on my mind.

I am not asking you to say words like yes and no, please understand me.
I've got no place for you to go.
I'm just breathing to myself,
pretending not that I don't know.
Babe, you've been on my mind.

Even though my mind is hazy and my thoughts,
they might be narrow, Where you been?
Don't bother me or bring me down in sorrow
It don't even matter to me where you're waking up tomorrow.
Babe, you've been on my mind.

When you wake up in the morning,
baby, look inside your mirror,
you know I won't be next to you.
You know I won't be near.
I'll just be curious to know if you can see yourself as clear
as someone who has had you on his mind.

Perhaps it's the color of the sun cut flat
uncovering the cross roads I am standing at.
Or maybe it's the weather or something like that
but babe, you've been on my mind.

Babe, you've been on my mind.
