I need to develop science activities on three non-science books made of elementary students (I need to pull 3 activities from each book). I don't have kids and so I lack a good kid-book library to choose from. Can any of you think of and recommend a book for me to find at the library?
For example: a book about a seed growing to be a plant would lead to a seed starting activity. A book about storms could lead to the water cycle.
The book has to be a story/picture book, not a science book.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I also should try to find a book I can some how relate to plate tectonics/oceanography so I can incorporate it into my lesson plans later on.
books on
sea floor life near thermal vents
living in Iceland or the Hawaiian isles
experiences an earthquake or volcanic eruption

Green Eggs & Ham: Scientific method
Rain Makes Applesauce--may be out of print. Very popular 40 years ago

												Ooh, I like this.
Can you be any more specific about age? "Elementary school" is a pretty wide swath. Does it not matter?
Spongebob might be a good segue to sealife.
I have brain overload right now (we have a zillion books and get about 25 a month from the library), a few more details and I'll start trying to focus.

I thought of a pretty good seed one:
June 29th, 1999 by David Wiesner

I love this book, maybe a unit on manatees, they're cool:
I'm a Manatee, by John Lithgow

OK, I'll wait for more details before I go crazy, lots of possibilities though.

The Magic Schoolbus series is tailor made for this sort of thing. I know we had one that covered sea floor life near thermal vents. I wonder if those would be considered science books?

Not a lot of details to give. I am doing a 5th grade lesson set on plate tectonics/oceanography - if I could find a suitable book for that, I'd be happy. The other grade levels don't much matter. I find it difficult to conceive of a picture book which is a story and which is suitable for 5th graders even if it does lead to age-level topics.
Thanks for the ideas, I'll look into those books.
