I find it indeed surprising, how many Irish there are around in the USA ..... while census figures only indicate, the Irish to be the second largest group. (34.487.790, ahead of the English on third position with 28.411.258 Americans claiming to be of that ancestry)

Source: Table 50. Population by Selected Ancestry Group and Region: 2004, US Census

48.208.433 Americans of German ancestry seem to be a lot more silent.

Can't deny that - one of my relatives was a Catholic priest, which didn't change those figures, dys. Officially, at least.

We're not exactly sure anymore if we've got any Irish in us. The general consensus is that we have a smidgeon. Probably. I used to tell everyone that I was 1/2 Irish and 1/2 Italian. Can't do that anymore.

I'm not Irish but I married a man who's brother has red hair and I drink green beer. That must count for something.

I read this on McBeans' blogthis morning:

Quote:
I was told I'm descended, in part, from members of the Orange Order. Not a thread of green worn on St. Patrick's day. Nope. A William of Orange loyalist. Protestant. Northerner.

I can still sing the song, but the lyrics are mostly gone.

Wilhelmus van Oranje
ben ik, van Duitsen bloed,
den vaderland getrouwe
blijf ik tot in den dood.
Een Prinse van Oranje
ben ik, vrij onverveerd,
den Koning van Hispanje
heb ik altijd geeerd.

Take that, you greenies!

I'm black Irish. (No, really. littlek can vouch for that.)

Hmm. I'm some mix of Scottish, German/Black Dutch, and American Indian.

I can out drink any of you silly Irish and don't have to color my beer to do so.

100% Slovak. Yeah, baby!

....though that means a mix of Celtic, Germanic, Turkic, Avaric, Hunish(sp?), Slavic, Frankic, Markomanic, and whoknowswhoelsic blood.
