George Takei takes on Tim Hardaway. I'm surprised he didn't make a comment on Tim Hardaway's last name......

Ooooh, sorry! He started very seriously saying he was saddened by the comments. But, he continued, he doesn't hate Tim. Actually, he and all gay men really reeeeeally like him. When the image of Tim gets bigger he's talking about his nice long legs. His hand hovers over his crotch. When he's rubbing his head he talks about bald chocolatey head with a sheen of sweat. Then he finishes by saying some day, when Tim least expects it, he will have sex with him. And gives a little mwahahaha.

Maybe I should have made the title of the thread more reflective of the video.

Hello, I'm George Takei. Recently, I've been troubled to hear comments made by former NBA all-star Tim Hardaway, who said, "I hate gay people. Let it be known: I don't like gay people. I'm homophobic."

As a gay man - and a human being - I was shocked, and saddened. But I want you to know, Tim, on behalf of gay people everywhere, that, despite your ugly words, we don't hate you. As a matter of fact, we like you. We like you very much. We particularly like your large, powerful calves. Your smooth, chocolatey head, glazed in man sweat. I'll keep my eyes on you.

And let it be known, one day, when you least expect it, I will have sex with you. Mwahahaha! I love sweaty basketball players!

That is the funniest thing I 've ever seen!!!

(Sulu knows a prospective date when he hears one. The ones who are so demonstrably freaked out about gaydom are just denying their attraction to people with their same sex parts...)

Captain Sulu always gets his man.... Laughing

That was like watching the video all over again. Well done, kris.

OK so if I imagine a hetero guy doing that to a hetero woman (who is for whatever reason patently not attracted) I get a little freaked. But there is an imbalance of power there that seems to go the other way for Takei/ Hardaway.

At any rate, Hardaway's comments were way stupid and it's nice to see someone say so.

I've yet to see a talking head defend the guy. Which I actually find a little dismaying, because I know plenty of the sporting world's talking heads must be in agreement, and I'm not a fan of the right thing being said just because it's the right thing to say...

True.

Haven't been following this in particular.

Hardaway's a jerk and deserves to be embarrassed for his comments but I still wince a little when I watch that.

All's fair in love and homophobia I guess.

In all fairness to Hardaway -- which is not to defend him, he's an ass, but in actual fairness, you know -- I listened to the recording of the comments a couple of times, and it had the sound of the very casual and jocular homophobia of the American jock. Not that it was good in the moment, but it reads worse in transcript than it sounds on tape. Really it was pretty typical of a large segment -- perhaps the larger segment -- of our society, and I think it reflects on our culture and on human nature in general as it reflects on Hardaway in particular.

At least Hardaway was forthright enough to speak in the media like he would speak in public. If you won't speak your mind simply because of propriety and public opinion -- well, sometimes propriety and public opinion are right, and sometimes they're wrong...

I agree wih points made by Soz and Pdawg. It made me wince too. Chocolatey head (eesh). And, yes, Tim Hardaway spoke his mind (a good thing, in general) and said what many think. Still, it is an issue needing to be talked about and dispelled, I think. For Takei, maybe it was just the straw that broke the camel's back?

I thought George was damn funny. He's kind of had a little renaissance as an old gay stereotype lately, but -- well, what else is he going to bank on?
