I saw that today on the news, New Haven. Fantastic flutist, and great performer.
Geez, I just got through posting re the death of Barry White and then notice this - so sad... Herbie was just wonderful and can't believe I didn't see this before. Thank you, NH, for posting it and thank you, Herbie Mann, for gracing us here on earth for a little while...
Oooh, I am going to go and put on The Great Mann, and hear about some Cuban Potato Chips...
I always loved Herbie Mann.
Time I listened to Memphis Underground again.
I´m sad for the rest of the day.
Yes, hebba, be sad ... but then celebrate his life, okay?
Was it Herbie Hancock or Herbie Mann that did "Bag's Groove"?
Letty, that definitely was Herbie Mann.
(By the way, Letty, please see my list of the top 10 one would like to have dinner with, ok? Thanks!)
Bags Groove-I think immediately of Milt Jackson.
Herbie Hancock has just played in Copenhagen and I couldn´t get a ticket.Dangit-especially dang because Bobby Hutcherson was with him!
Good grief, hebba, I had to resort to Google to recall what Herbie Hancock did. "Watermelon Man" was fantastic.
Also "Rockit", "Chameleon" , the "Death wish" soundtrack, and compositions for the "Fat Albert" series, to name a few things...
Well, snood, you're a walkin discography? Ever hear of Arthur Capehart or Earl VanRiper?
...don't claim to be a discography, walkin' or otherwise - Herbie was just a fav of mine. Nope, can't say I have - backup musicians?
Snood. I was just jokin' wid 'ya. Those guys were fantastic musicians whom I knew. One played trumpet just as well as Louis, and the other played fabulous piano. "Cape" as we referred to him, is no longer with us, and Earl is probably playin' blues up North, somewhere.
My favourite Hancock albums are "Maiden Voyage" and "Speak Like A Child".Both from the mid 60´s on Blue Note.Worth checking out Letty if you´re not familiar with them.

Hey, people!
This thread is for the passing of Herbie Mann! If everyone would like to talk Jazz/Blues etc., let's start another thread, ok? Don't mean to be rude, but it's a bit unsettling to return and see the turn away from this Herbie's passing the way it has ... sorry
