hey, I have a desktop computer and a laptop both with windows xp. How do I set up one network so I can share files between the two? I tried to set one up on my desktop, but I can't access it through the laptop. Thanks!

Microsoft: Setting Up Your Network

Short version: as long as both machines have a network adapter, which is not required for internet connectivity, a simple CAT5 Crossover cable can be used, but, again provided both machines have network adapters, far more functionality and flexibility will be had via setting up your network with a router.
