Firefox question

Reply Fri 26 Jan, 2007 06:16 am
Every couple of days, I lose my bookmarks, cookies and history.

I have dug around but can not find a setting to stop this.

What is going on? Is this some thing I set up to happen and just dont realize it?
Where can I go in Mozilla to change this?

Have a look at >tools >options> privacy.

Explore the tick box options as well as <settings> for privacy data.

2.0.0.1 <- version

I checked the privacy and security options.

I have it set to where it does not automatically remove this information. In fact, I set it that way when I started it and it is still set that way.

Could it be another program?

Possibly. there are programs that will clean cache history etc maybe you have one running in background and ahve forgotten about it.
More likely you just arent seeing all the options in firefox.
My son (15) turned off all his history etc so he could sneak off to porn sites without it showing up. I let him go for a week or two then sneakily turned it back on again. 'Youre nicked sunshine" I said after a week.

what spywear programs do you have running?

Many will "clear private data" automatically.

Shewolf, it does sound like another program might be the culprit. You'll need to look carefully at all the options for each spyware/washer/etc. you're running.

You can retrieve your lost Firefox bookmarks by going to your Start menu --> Run. Type in %appdata%

This will bring up a list of application data folders. Select Mozilla, open the Firefox folder inside, and then open Profiles. You should see something like 123xxx.default. Open that, and voila! ...your bookmark backups.

If I may, without bothering the fun you kids have been having so far, I'd like to offer some actual informed help.

About 99% of the time, if Firefox "loses" your bookmarks, its far more likely to be a misconfiguration or misapplication issue than an actual Firefox issue, and typically is easily tracked down and remedied: See Mozillazine Lost Bookmarks.

If nothing there helps (which would be extremely unlikely, but still ... ), lemme know, and we can go at it from a different angle.

Your protests - and the manner thereof - do nothing to alter the fact you frequently post in misinformed, childish, peurile, immature, unadult fashion.

Always a good idea to periodically back up your bookmarks.

There may be other ways, but this is how I backup:

Bookmarks-->Organize Bookmarks-->File-->Export

Then designate a location for your backup "bookmarks.html" file.

Trust me, kid - I ain't the pest here - and rest assured I only very most rarely employ lexicographical support (though I admit freely I should proofread and spellcheck more diligently than customarilly is my practice Rolling Eyes ).

I submit, however, that the solecisms, grammatical barbarisms, misinformation, juvenile rants, and puerile inanities which to this point have characterized your postings to these boards permit only one conclusion pertaining to the matter of such maturity as you may have achieved; the evidence is clear, abundant, and without contraindication.

Speaking of Firefox bookmark questions: I installed Firefox some time ago and it conveniently imported all my bookmarks from Safari. I still use Safari on occasion though (there are times when it is more convenient for me to use Safari over Firefox, and vice versa), and have since added and removed certain bookmarks. I would like to re-import these bookmarks into Firefox, but I can't figure out how to do it. Does anyone know how to import bookmarks a second time into Firefox?

I've never done it, but I suspect you:

Bookmarks-->Organize Bookmarks-->File-->Import

Then identify the file you're importing. I'm not familiar with Safari, but perhaps you will need to export your bookmarks from Safari into a recognizable format.

It would, obviously, be a good idea to back up your FF bookmarks before you attempted this.

That did the trick... thanks very much. I hadn't realized that the Manage Bookmarks option had its own menu. But now I know. Thanks again!
