BBB's 2 weeks of worry re terrible auto accident

My daughter-in-law's son and his cousin were terrible injured in an auto accident in North Carolina two weeks ago. He was driving his 1976 classic Monte Carlo when the power steering belt broke and fell out of the car. He lost control and crashed into a concrete bridge abutment. It took 1-1/2 hours for the rescurers to cut them out of the car with "the jaws of life." He was badly injured, but his cousin was hurt worse and his survival is unsure. Multi-Compound leg fractures, boken arms, broken collar bones, broken pelvis, broken ribs, internal injuries---but they are alive. His injuries have been treated, but his cousin is so badly injured they've not been able to do much injury repair; he's still in a coma.

My son and his wife just returned from a week at their bedsides and showed me some photos of the car.

How did they get out alive?

What's left of the car

I am glad to hear that they are both alive. I'll keep the one boy in the coma my thoughts. I hope the other boy is feeling better and recovering quickly.

I don't seem to be able to post the photos on A2K. From the damage to the car, none of the rescurers expected to find anyone alive. Their seat belts saved the boys from going through the windshield.

oh my god.

so IF he survives it, will he even be able to walk again? Will his body work for him at all?

The cousin has now developed pneumonia and the news is not good.

The son is now staying with his grandparents with a very long recovery ahead. He will be able to walk but his body will never be the same. He has two young sons to support.

I wish I could show the car photos because it's hard to believe anyone survived that crash. If you remember Princess Diane's car wreck pictures, the boy's car suffered much more damage plus they were in the front seat. The age of the Monte Carlo car and it's strong metal exterior made all the safety difference from the material in modern cars. In 1976 cars didn't come with air bags.

Buckle your seatbelts!

Thanks, Shewolf. Now you can see the extent of car damage and why it took so long to cut the two men out of the car. Everyone who saw the wreck said they should be dead.

You can see why they had so much severe lower body injuries as they were in the front seat.

That is ugly. Prayers sent.

I suspect something in the linkage broke, not a belt. Power steering is just that, without it, you can still steer, it's just hard.

How awful! You're right, it's amazing anyone survived!

Keep us informed about the boys' progress. Please.
