I watched the interview of the authors on C-SPAN today, The Starfish and the Spider: The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations by Ori Brafman, Rod Beckstrom.

If you cut off a spider's leg, it's crippled; if you cut off its head, it dies. But if you cut off a starfish's leg it grows a new one, and the old leg can grow into an entirely new starfish.

Their theory is right on target and important to understand events in the Middle East. For example, Islam is a "starfish" structure religion. Catholism is a "spider" structure religion. Christianity follows that structure in many, but not all respects. The starfish structure reproduces itself and will survive no matter how much resistance.

Al Qaeda is a "starfish" while our military is a "spider."
