Roberta, Didnt know you were an editor. I just finished "I was Vermeer" abouth the life of Han van Meegeren , who was so adept a faking Vermeer that he was tried at Nuremburg for treason, accused of selling National Treasures to the NAzis. Actually he was fleecing Hermann Goering by painting fake Vermeers and selling the fakes for amounts equivalent to 11 million dollars (1943 dollars). van Meegeren is a fascinating subject but the book , by an Author named Frank Wynne, was such an attempt at sounding "accessible" that most of the story was eviscerated. Maybe it was written for people having more advanced ADHD than I , so Wynne tried to make the story whizz along . Consequently, there are huge gaps of important stuff that need telling.
I hate writers like that, they are as annoying as the other extreme.

Roberta, woman does not live on water alone. No, no no, certainly not just water even though NYC's tap water is the best and certainly not this woman. My highly valued opinion would have to be based on generosity of drink and food. Alcoholic beverages make me pee much more often than unexciting water. Add a little food and you also add a little more to do in the can. That needs to be a factor. It is one thing to be able to do the women's pee hover and quite another to manage something far more complicated. As you know, older women have a harder time with the hover. Add to that the scarcity of places to put their handbags when taking a seat is a neccesity, and you've got the terminal case of hover 'till you're shaking syndrome.

Then, as no one has mentioned, are there one seaters, two seaters, three seaters or a unisex, in which case the men are simply out of luck. Also, I might want to go into the protocol of unisex. For instance, should a woman put the seat up after she is finished, for the benefit of men, or should there be a general seat-down understanding?

Is the establishment in danger of rioting by angry women standing about with their legs crossed? One, two or three seats can make a huge difference in the general aura of the place when urgencey is not respected by the establishment in question. Men tend to get very nervous in such joints, understandably so. There is nothing quite like a woman who needs to pee in the worst way. She becomes a dangerous amazonian tigress in her urgency, willing to push and shove and force her way in before all others.

I guess you could call this an urbanity of uranity, which involves strategic placement and availability.

Sigh. I give and give and what do I get? Not enough damn bathrooms, fer Pete's (and Diane's) sake.

This is a complicated issue that can, literally, dampen one's enjoyment of the City.

There, end of rant and reply to Boidy.

Diane, Hovering? What's with the hovering? Put down some paper and sit the hell down. Some LRs have seat cover dispensers for the purpose.

Most Broadway theaters have too few booths for woman. Radio City Music Hall has the best in terms of number.

You wanna eat and booze your way through NYC, Lady Di, do it on your own advance.

Beth, Hotel LRs offer some fairly clean and decent facilities.

How did we get onto the subject of peeing in the Big Apple? I brung it up, and let that be a lesson to me.

My mother knew of every decent LR in midtown. I shoulda took notes. Another opportunity missed.

farmerman, I rarely work on the kind of book you describe. (Love Vermeer, btw. There are two great ones at the Frick.) However, the author probably needed some serious guidance in the writing. I used to do that kind of thing. Can't offer much in the way of explanation. Oversights. Trying to set a tone and in so doing losing the meat of the work. Any number of possibilities. Books can be flawed in more ways than I can count. Sorry the book wasn't better. It sounds like a fascinating story, and it's a shame that the author didn't do it justice.

Back again. It occurred to me that I have missed a major contributor to extra mistakes we're all seeing in books. (Not substantive mistakes, but small ones.) COMPUTERS.

A lot of editing is now done on computers. It's far more difficult work. In fact, one company pays me more to edit a manuscript on the computer than on paper. I find that I miss more.

The problem is compounded by companies now proofreading on computer as well. A big mistake in my opinion. At no time does anyone ever see what will be printed on paper actually appear on paper.

Roberta, I know you well enough to know that you are consistently given the tough assignments. If you miss more mistakes, then I can understand why, for the past several years, there have been so many more obvious editing mistakes in all books. I have often wondered about that, thanks for clearing it up.

Roberta. I refuse to review my report writing on screen. I too miss things because of some mysterious eye/screen macular thing. I often download and print my report and edit it with an "X-out. Then we use an OCR to find the spots I made my corrections and my assistant will write in my correctons or new phrases. ISTill love OCR.

It's time to revive this slumbering thread & have a major vent!

Life has been challenging, folks! I mean wouldn't you be a wee bit cranky if all these (big & small) things happened to you in the space of around 7 -8 days?:

* A huge family to-do over my elderly mother's future. Lots of phone calls, a trip to the country, a manipulating sister attempting to corner what's left of my mother's $$$$ (she succeeds), a mother who frequently changes her mind about what she actually wants. Much unpleasant & nasty fall-out.

* Blocked sewerage pipe at my house, causing most unpleasant pongs, followed by a large-ish plumber's bill to fix the problem.

* A student in a "challenging" class tells me to "get faxed" (a common occurrence at this school Rolling Eyes ) & is suspended.

* My computer monitor dies suddenly on Saturday. Rush off to the Brotherhood op shop to get a 2nd hand one (can't afford a new one right now) half an hour before they close. I now have the most humungous monitor I've ever seen in my life! Surprised Laughing

* Lost two single favourite earrings, from two different sets, on two different days, within the space of 3 days.

* Bought a new toilet cistern (because the plumber said I needed to). This, after my handyman replaced the previous one less than 4 months ago. Wrong size/not enough flush. Bring home the newest one & book the plumber to install it. Right box, wrong cistern in it. Plumber not impressed when he turns up to do the job! Back to Bunnings (after endless phone calls to locate the size I need) & get the right one (I hope!) on Sunday. Plumber coming again, to install it on Thursday. Sigh.

* Go out to collect the morning paper a bit after 6 am, yesterday morning. Gale-force wind slams the side gate shut behind me & jams it so it will not budge! Stand on an upside-down bucket (in draw-string pajama bottoms & skimpy little top!) to reach over & try to open it from the other side. Half an hour & much banging & clanging later, manage to get the damn gate open without waking the entire neighborhood. Sigh.

* and, and ...... (No, maybe that's enough for the time-being? )

I'm wondering if it's karma, or something (?) that causes such a run of horrible things to happen, one straight after another? Why, why? Confused This has felt like some sort of hideous marathon!

Vent over!
I feel much better now! (touching wood)Very Happy

Msolga - surely next week has to be better (nothing worse than losing one of a pair of earrings - you hold on to them forever hoping the other will turn up innit?)

My friend and I were thrown out of a toilet cubicle in a nightclub last weekend having been wrongly accused of drug taking!

I was in the middle of pulling my pants up when they burst in (there was no locks on any of the doors) and my friend was behind the door. We had our bags and pockets serached in front of a huge queue of other people waiting.

The bouncer came up to me later to apologise and told me the management made them do it but it kind of spoiled my night.

Crikey, Dorothy! That's terrible! Shocked

"Kind of spoiled your night?" Is that all?
I'd at least have a little chat with management after that!

Ok, all on Novemeber first I:

1. Start my very first take-over week at school. I teach from 8:45 to 2:45. I plan, I decide what to assign, etc. I am freaking out.
2. My in class inquiry working draft is due for my seminar (not even sure what a working plan is and how it's different from the final project).
3. My 5-lesson unit (due last week and not completed) is to be started (actually, it has been started) in class.
4. A write up on observations of my class at 'specialists' (gym, art, library, etc) due. I have been to see gym. Three to go tomorrow! (most of last week was half-days with precious few specialists to observe).
5. chapter five of my text to be read for seminar - not going to happen.

In the last week I found
6. a second major dent in my car which also happened (as did the first one) while it was parked.
7. I have two fillings which have cracked away from my tooth, need to be refilled.
8. I am some how grinding my teeth.
9. my car has only one working headlight.
10. got my syllabus for my next class which starts in JANUARY! Just a little cherry on top.

But, the family is all good and relations are peaceful. Thank goodness!
