What music provides the soundtrack to the Iraq war?

This question came up over lunch today:

Besides, Green Day's "American Idiot" what music will be used as the soundtrack to movies made about the Iraq War?

Are there certain songs that you can think of?

Or certain types of music: rap, hip hop, what?

Do you think the songs in a soundtrack about war need to come from the same period that the war was fought or do you think it is more about the overall effect of the music and lyrics?

Thanks!

The U.S. effort may be summed up in the title of the Ramones' "Swallow My Pride"...

I don't know it there is a song titled Shock and Awe so, in its stead, I suggest Dazed and Confused.

(Side note: did anyone see: Rock and Awe: Guitarmageddon on the Stephen Colbert show the other night? Hilarious, and not just the title.)

Between posting this question and getting back to read the replies my brother, a soldier, called so I posed the question to him.

His answer: rap and country. He thought it was a real manic depressive music vibe when he was in Iraq. One song he mentioned that everyone seemed to like was by Toby Keith called something like "Letters from home".

I'm not familar with that one or several of the ones mentioned on this thread so I'll have to hijack Mr. B's computer to give them a listen -- even though I think some of them were added for "joke" value -- which was not why I suggested the album "American Idiot" though I do agree that it fits in that regard too.

The first song that came to my mind is so appropriate, it was even featured in a documentary ( I believe it was Micheal Moore's 911 show..) .

A young soldier is standing outside of a small village watching it burn.

Apparently, they had just attacked it. No idea wether or not there was anyone in there burning, but in the background you can hear HIS choice of music - a band called Coal Chamber, thier song Sway.

And that would be my choice.
More for the mental state of the soldiers then anything else, wich is a strange mind set.. but .

When I think of the war, the first thing I think of are the soldiers.
How will they come home?
Are they sane? etc..

Quote:

COAL CHAMBER LYRICS
"Sway"

the roof the roof the roof is on fire
we don't need no water let the ************ burn
burn ************ burn

burn, burn, burn, burn

just a little and nothing now it's over
just a little and nothing now it's over
what you said, no,
you're never gonna say again
in your own special way you tear me down

sway - so hypnotic

neither up nor down,
just been turned and turned
it just sits inside so it burns and burns
if i can't decide what makes you hurt
in your own special way you tear me down

so ask me please, please

give me something good, now
something
give me something good, now
give me

come sway this way
