The war of pedestrians vs. motorists took a new turn downtown Tuesday night, and this time a driver brought a gun to the fight, according to Chicago Police.

No shots were fired, but when it was all over, the victim was lying in an intersection -- injured after being knocked to the ground by the vehicle and then pistol-whipped by the driver, his family says. The motorist ended up behind bars.

This apparent case of road rage unfolded about 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Randolph and Columbus, Chicago Police Officer John Mirabelli said.

Police arrest driver

A driver turning onto eastbound Randolph honked his horn at Kevin Rogers, a former police officer who is now a lawyer, according to police and Rogers' family.

A witness told police that Rogers slapped a side window on the car. The driver stopped, jumped out of his 2000 Volkswagen Golf with a .380 caliber semiautomatic weapon, hit Rogers with the gun and drove away.

A witness saw the car's license plate, and police arrested the driver at a nearby condominium complex.

Rogers, who told family he was struck by the car and beaten in an unprovoked attack, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital by a witness. He was being treated for non life-threatening injuries.
