Did You Get the License Number of that Poster?

Yesterday, I felt as if I was hit by a truck when a "newbie" responded to criticism in a uniquely disgusting way. I guess, after a while, we learn to trust certain posters but not others. Is there any "safe" way to criticize a poster that you are not familiar with?

Nope.

People refuse to take opinions for what they are: someone elses opinions.

And there will always be idiots.

And people who refuse to see logic.

And those who hate to be told they are wrong.

Good riddens to bad rubbish.

Thanks, bella.

You seem to know which incident I was talking about.

I particulary felt sorry for you yesterday. Are you feeling okay?

Gus,
You are very lucky that you missed it. Two threads were involved. The threads were locked and then completely incinerated by the hamsters.

wandeljw - I don't know to what you were referring, but, IMO, you need to pay it no mind. I am often amazed by newbies, who are not familiar with the "lay of the land", who will jump in and write something totally inappropriate. I have seen this happen "in real life", and I find it quite obnoxious.

I would expect that these are the sorts of people whom I would ignore in the future.

I may have enjoyed that sort of thing. Is this person still around?

Phoenix,

The incident was beyond "inappropriate". Bella witnessed it. I really felt sorry for her.

The incident to which Wandel refers involved what may well qualify as the most disgusting response any member has ever made to criticism at this site. The new member proposed a philosophical question in S & R, which was delivered in appallingly bad English. Another member responded with a glaring misspelling, but an otherwise reasonable response. The very title of the thread contained a glaring spelling error.

So, i posted, listing the misspelled word in the title, and the spelling error the first respondent made, and then said that one does not know what to think. A few others responded, and responded on topic.

But this new member's ego was apparently so fragile that he felt compelled to rant about being bashed for his spelling. He also made reference to other fora in which his spelling errors would not be noticed, and made a sneer at the entire site with its "ask an expert" slogan. I responded (as did others) by pointing out that if you present yourself poorly, you are unlikely to get a good response to those who find it difficult to read what you post. I then tore the initial post apart, both because it contained repeated gross spelling errors, grammatical errors, and because it contained a set of a priori assumptions. I observed thtat if you show up for a job interview in grubby clothing, you are unlikely to get the job. I pointed out that appearances do matter, and that the quality of how one presents one's arguments is very important rhetorically.

This joker went ballistic, and began posting some of the most disgusting images i've ever had the misfortune to have seen online. At one point, seeing that O'Bill had posted in the thread, i went to the thread, and my computer locked up, and i had to go off-line to break the jam. Djjd reported that he was forced to reboot his computer. The images were huge (which will shut down a dial-up connection), and very likely were linked to sites which were attempting to put spyware, or other yuckware, and/or images on the computers of anyone who came in contact with the hot links to the images.

That was the most incredible, and incredibly nasty, attack on the site by a registered member that i've ever seen at any site.

Set- Was that the thread where the porn pictures were posted? I have cable, so they did not screw up my computer. I did click off immediately.

One of the things that I have noticed lately. I am usually on A2K very early in the morning, and will report any spam that I see to the mods. Usually, it is simply someone who wants to hawk some product of theirs, and the like.

Lately, I have been spotting newbie threads with long lists of threads to porn sites. What is even worse, I found newbie threads with long lists of links to things, that at first glance, do not appear to be porn sites, but one never knows.

It seems to me that you are looking for that sort of thing, Phoenix.

Is there something you want to tell me?

Yeah, it was that thread. I guess you could call it porn but I'd be more inclined to call it simply rotten sh!t. Laughing

It was pretty awful.

I am not easily grossed out but trust me, this one made my stomach turn a bit and my eyebrow raise. Who even does a search for this kind of stuff?

That's what got me. What do you google? Or do you just know where to find things like that?

Either way, I am ok wandlejw. No permanant damage done. I'm a tough cookie.

On average, Phoenix, I must report about eight or so of these spammers each day. They seem to be proliferating.

.....and then we have this strange thing going on.

Not anywhere near as bad as the incident Set described, but something that is making my nostrils twitch, all the same.

Did you add your new sig line as a direct result of the trauma inflicted on you by the severity of the aforementioned thread, Bella.

You poor thing.

Just a coincidence Gus...Just a coincidence.

Had I added, shooting things in the air with it, then it would be apparent that it was due to the trauma.

Yes, Phoenix, one never does know.

The reason i speculated as i did on why my computer locked-up and Djjd's computer crashed is because this sort of thing has happened to me before. I play RPGs--role playing games--which can be customized. To get custom images, i got to fantasy art sites for sword and sorcery images. Those sites are often linked to erotic art sites, and porno sites. Very often, those sites use a variety of links, many with innocuous names. I know this because i've been sucked into the same nasty sites again and again--and as soon as you get there, the attempt to take over your computer. I will hit "cntrl-alt-delete," to shut them down, but if that doesn't move quickly enough, i have often just reached down and unplugged the computer.

The first time it happened, i just kinda stared at the screen in awe as one window after another opened without my doing anything. When i finally managed to shut it all down, there were more than 20 windows open. I rebooted and ran a spy-check program, and found more than 60 files had been added to my computer. I then search for .jpg, .gif and other image and video files, and it took me, literally, days to clean that crap off my computer--i had to look at every image file that i did not recognize and delete it if necessary. The video files were easier, because the idjits download them directly to the "My Pictures" folder or the "My Music" folder.

All that occurred because while at a fantasy art site, i clicked on a link for another fantasy art site, which was in fact a false front for a porno site. One of the most despicable things which were downloaded onto my computer were dialing programs, which will take over your computer, and connect to special sites which will download porn as though there were no tomorrow. However, i was using a coaxial cable DSL, so the dailing programs first attempted to dial a number on what the program assumed was a phone company DSL, and i was able to shut each one down before it connected.

I strongly suspect that several of the images this clown posted here were similarly hot-linked, and that was what caused the problem on my box and Djjd's box.

One thing that I know. I will never search for a porn site, for a number of reasons. I don't want spam, viruses or other infections corrupting this computer. I am also not the least bit interested in porn.

When I got my first computer, in 1999, I inadvertently clicked on something or other. I was very "green" at the time, and did not understand the pitfalls of internet surfing. What I got was a dating site that had a picture of an old, ugly, man completly naked and trussed up in complete leather S&M regalia.

The site of it traumatized me so badly, that I am now super carefu
