The first chemical treatment for curling hair that was suitable for use on people was invented in the year 1906 by the German hairdresser Karl Nessler (1872-1951). The first public demonstration took place on October 8, 1906. (But Nessler had been working on the idea since 1896.)

Oh boy, Miss America of 1926 was very brave - that looks like torture.

Yeah, right! You can tell us a lot of things, but will we believe it?
Especially in the wake of your real-life avatar - exhibit A http://www.borge.diesal.de/board02/images/smiles/NAUGHTY.gif

I used to handle permanent wave cases when I practiced law. Don't laugh, a lot of people are allergic to the wave solution (or a relaxer, which is a similar thing) or the solution is mixed improperly or left on too long. Your hair can fall out or you can get an allergic-style reaction. Generally, these injuries are not permanent or too terribly painful or itchy. It's more of a humiliation factor than anything else.

I'm sure Walter is of the curly hair folk...

permanent wave... my mother and aunt were done up in something not quite so bad as the photo in the early example, but almost. I did go with them to beauty parlours. Or, parlors.
I was a lucky girl, with Natural Curly Hair, so I didn't have to deal with that, the realm of the fry machines.

I remember the perms of the fifties as what I would now call crimped..

but I was a captive of the early sixties, when all the magazine models had silky straight hair. I wasn't the only one who actually ironed her hair. Once.

I loved it when afros and curlies in general came in. Loved it.

Ask me about Slenderalla..
