i thought it would be interesting to share the lyrics that have inspired us, or maybe change our views on certain issues, maybe we just think they're catchy. either way it would be cool to share what our favourite lyrics are and why.

'I never held emotion in the palm of my hand'.
I thought he said 'an ocean in the palm of my hand' which is great imagery.

Good choice, hard to beat Prince isn't it...I'll go with a few words from the Doobies.
"Why you in such a hurry
To be lonely one more night"

I've always loved that Prince line also...

												Symphony X - Awakenings
Needless to say, another day has passed away
Yet everything, and nothing, has changed
Awake I lie, my thoughts get lost up in the sky
Needless to say, nothing will change
Maybe a mystic with fortunes to tell
Surrender my coin at the old wishing well
Maybe the stars will align in the night
To show me the path that is right
Would've been's and could've been's
They waste my days away
The colors of my life dissolve and fade to gray
So many paths of promise
Indecision poisons my mind
If only I had seen the signs, so blind
Ohh, so blind
Oh oh
Yet I must journey on
On and on
A haunting vision torments me
It smothers and steals my dreams
I see an old man in the mirror
Cold and bitter starring back at me
Here I am
At the crossing of life I stand
On my own
Looking down the road
Hear my cry
Answer me
Still I'm searching
Yet the truth is unknown
Though the night is cold
I walk the road alone
Here I am
At the crossing of life I stand
On my own
Looking down the road
Hear my cry
Answer me
Still I'm searching
Yet the truth is unknown
Though the night is cold
I walk the road alone
Yes I walk
I walk the road alone

												Llloyd Cole & The Commotions
"Rattlesnakes"
jodie wears a hat although it hasn't rained for six days
she says a girl needs a gun these days
hey on account of all the rattlesnakes
she looks like eve marie saint in on the waterfront
she reads simone de beauvoir in her american circumstance
she's less than sure if her heart has come to stay in san jose
and her neverborn child still haunts her
as she speeds down the freeway
as she tries her luck with the traffic police
out of boredom more than spite
she never finds no trouble, she tries too hard
she's obvious despite herself
she looks like eve marie saint in on the waterfront
she says all she needs is therapy yeah
all you need is, love is all you need
jodie never sleeps 'cause there are always needles in the hay
she says that a girl needs a gun these days
hey on account of all the rattlesnakes
she looks like eve marie saint in on the waterfront
as she reads simone de beauvoir in her american circumstance
her heart, heart's like crazy paving
upside down and back to front
she says ooh, it's so hard to love
when love was your great disappointment

												When did you leave Heaven
How could they let you go
How's everything in Heaven
I'd like to know
Why did you leave Heaven
For all these earthly things
Where did you hide your halo
When did you lose your wings
Have they missed you
Can you get back in
Anf if I were to kiss you
Would it be a sin
Oh I'm only human
But you are so divine
When did you leave Heaven
Angel mine

There's a train that leaves the station
Heading for your destination
But the price you pay to nowhere has increased a dollar more.

												''i've collected all these thoughts,
now i'm dying just to lose them.
and if your words are true or not,
i'd die trying to prove them.
but i just have to accept
that my mind is so inept.
now the only thing that's left
for me to do is to trust in you.

i place the emphasis on the evidence,
  begging for the proof.
sometimes the hardest thing to believe
  is the truth.''

I'm a poorman's son from across the railroad tracks
The only shirt I own is hangin' on my back
But I'm the envy of every single guy
Since I'm the apple of my girl's eye

A few months back, Djjd posted a link to a site that had a bunch of mp3 downloads, they were mashups...two or more totally unrelated songs mashed together. One of my favorites is "Maggie May's" melody, with "Uptight's" lyrics...and a bit of updated drum mixing...could be another song that I just don't recognize.
A lot of 60's R&B/Soul is just way to busy for my taste...I like it, but like it better when its minimalized...I can't deal with too much going on in a song, especially when brass is involved, horns flat out kill a song for me. There are so many songs that I would love to be able to listen to without all the extra production...the artists voice being the standout instrument...perhaps the basic melody, bass or drum line left in...but as simple as possible. I have looked at "stripping programs"...where you can manipulate songs in such a way, but they are so expensive.
Uptight in it's original form is a very complicated song, in the mashed version you get to hear Stevie really sell it...he tells it like it is, and I believe him....
"I'm a poorman's son from across the railroad tracks..."
Preach it to me Stevie, preach it.

I wrote a very long reply to this a few nights ago...lost it, little A2k problem...but it was my fault...lost two long ones that night...ugg.
What I wrote about was Phil Spector, but none of it is worth repeating...I like some of his work, some I don't...and he is still waiting to go to trial for murder.
And, I've tried on many occasions to appreciate Mr Brown...but he just does not grab my attention. "Brand New Bag" is a catchy tune though.

'In the arms of an angel'
by Sarah McLachlan
Spend all your time waiting
For that second chance
For a break that would make it okay
There's always one reason
To feel not good enough
And it's hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction
Oh beautiful release
Memory seeps from my veins
Let me be empty
And weightless and maybe
I'll find some peace tonight
In the arms of an angel
Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort there
So tired of the straight line
And everywhere you turn
There's vultures and thieves at your back
And the storm keeps on twisting
You keep on building the lie
That you make up for all that you lack
It don't make no difference
Escaping one last time
It's easier to believe in this sweet madness oh
This glorious sadness that brings me to my knees
In the arms of an angel
Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort there
You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here
Another one:
Wish you were here by Pink Floyd
So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skys from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade
Your heros for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

												Jill by Harry Connick Jr.
(virtually no accompaniment, just the haunting melody of his voice)
I know a girl
Who says she loves me
She says she needs me
And I have reason to believe her
Good reason
Like when we kiss
My eyes won't open
My heart won't listen
And I don't have a word to say
No not a word
Look my darling
And you'll hear me sing
I love you
With my eyes
Let me hold you
Really hold you
Then you'll know
My heart just can't tell lies
It knows true love
It knows it's you love
And it knows that you say you love me
And I say I love you too
