This may sound funny but I've downloaded 5 renditions of Ave Maria. To me this represents one of the most moving and pure songs ever. Not one satisfies me. Singers include Charlotte Church, Celine Dion and Nana Moskouri. To give an example of what's wrong Celine Dion's has too modern an interpretation. For some reason I would prefer a woman singer to a male version. Any suggestions?

Edgar-- good suggestion. I had forgotten that one. And you're correct. That is a wonderful rendition.

Setanta not familiar with Frankie Schubert's but I'll look for it. Thank you.

Bob

Actually, Setanta refers to one of the best known pieces in music. (Although Jonny Creek isn't a bad guess, too. )

Thanks Walter. I really want a woman's voice alone or if not a mixed chorale group. In my mind's eye that's what I hear.

If that doesn't do it for you, go to amazon.com and enter ave maria into the search field. It will come up with over 1600 references in music alone with many having soundbites of the recording to audit. I just listened to a soundbite of it from a Sarah Brightman album that was quite lovely. You can hear it here:

Hey Setanta I tried to set up an appointment with this Frankie Schubert guy and was told he died in 1828. That the same guy?

Yeah that's him, he's a very bad rep for being late . . . so much so, in fact, that they refer to him as the late Franz Schubert . . .

Jonny Creek died as well, lived from 1685 to 1750 and was famous under his German name Johann Sebstian Bach.

Call me a non traditionalist (or a wacko), but there is a version by Chris Cornell (yes, lead singer of SoundGarden) that is very good. Not sure where it's from, but was very impressed when I heard it. Guy can actually sing.
