529 plans and other college savings plans

I have a 12 yo and a 14yo. Does anyone have advice on college savings plans? I've invested in an out of state 529 plan because of the low maint. fees but would I be better off with an in state plan for tax reasons? Newly single and worried about my future finances---any advice??
