This is why I won't use debit cards....

There was an article on fark.com recently about someone in California that had a $5000 charge at McDonalds. The employee simply double-entered 541 for a $5.41 charge. Bingo, $5,415.41 charge on the debit card.

They should be falling all over themselves to apologize, but naturally their lawyers are advising them not to admit fault. Which comes off as a lie, since they're clearly at fault.

Bingo.

The wierd thing is that the 9 thousand dollars , wasnt even the same number combination as Hubbys charge.

Someone just wasnt paying attention. Period.

Or trying to scam someone out of some money
If that were the case, they were really stupid.
Who wouldnt notice a charge of that amount on their bill???

So, how should I write this letter?
What should I say?

I have 3 printouts from my account.
One that shows the initial charge, and the negative balance I had.
2 from BofA that show the charge comes directly from IHOP and what time it was.

............ what should I say?

Dear fukers? Laughing

But you can always debt the card, yourself and besides, you should be getting a receipt, after the transaction.

They probably caught the error when totalling out the register, and destroyed the receipt.

I am sure the gifted writers here will have a perfect draft, but in the
meantime, something along these lines...

Dear District Manager (try to get his/her name)

We have been dedicated patrons of our local IHOP for many years,
and always enjoyed your meals tremendously.
After a recent visit where the total bill added to $ 8.71 (excluding gratitude)
our account at BofA - via debit card - was charged $ 9000.00 by IHOP.

We immediately contacted our local IHOP and reported what obviously
must have been a mistake, only to find out that IHOP was denying all
charges despite clear evidence via a bank statement that IHOP had made
a transaction of debiting $ 9000.00 from our debit card.

Our account with BofA was immediately frozen until further investigation, and crucial payment checks for rent and utilities were left uncovered, as our checking account was not funded with $ 9000. Additionally, late fee charges were applied by the bank and check recipients.

Furthermore, we had no cash access until the investigation was resolved,
forcing us to ask friends for grocery items as we have a 2 year old child
who needed at least an emergency supply of food.

Had IHOP immediately taken action to rectify their mistake, we would
not have been in such a predicament. Instead we were trying to survive
a stressful weekend that left us penniless. The very least IHOP should
have done, is apologize to us and contact our BofA branch, however,
none of it took place.

In writing to you, we are hoping that a district manager has the necessary insight and people skills to investigate this matter and take
appropriate actions. At the very least we demand an open apology.

Thank you kindly
bla bla bla

Consider slipping something like this in somewhere so it doesnt sound like youre loading up for a lawsuit.

" HAd the managerial staff at our local IHOP promptly and honestly taken care of this error, you probably would now be recieving a letter of commendation from us regarding how professionaly your franchise manager handled this problem. However, we never expected that you would, as a company, take a dishonest position that was clearly overturned on the sheer weight of our Banks records.
With absolutely no thanks to your organization, our bank rectified the error , restored our bank account, and prevented any serious damage to our good credit. What we find most unconscionable was IHOP's attempt to deny any responsibility in the first place. I think that IHOP should be as concerned about business ethics as you say you are about food quality"

I would also advise not saying that you paid bank overdraft charges or returned check fees on rent or utilities unless that were actually true--if the response to your letter includes an offer to pay any fees you were obliged to pay, you're going to look awfully damned bad if you can't show you paid any such fees.

they tried to charge me $8,374.32

I said, NO WAY, take that wasabi off there!

That brought it down to $7.95.

If it hadn't been for shewolf.....sheesh.

in overdraft charges.
