Appleton Man Accused Of Stealing Boy's Ice Cream

(AP) CHILTON, Wis. An Appleton man is accused of stealing a bucket of ice cream from a 14-year-old boy.

20-year-old Ryan Van Hammond faces a felony theft charge after prosecutors say he took ice cream the boy was carrying home from a grocery store on his birthday.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison. Van Hammond was also charged with two felony bail-jumping counts, which carry a total maximum penalty of twelve years.

According to the criminal complaint, the boy was returning from a grocery store last month when Van Hammond forced the ice cream from him.

Court documents say when the two were struggling, Van Hammond told the boy "Do you want me to kill you?"

The complaint says Van Hammond told police he asked for the ice cream because he was hungry, but later realized what he did was wrong so he left it on the sidewalk.

Van Hammond waived his preliminary hearing on the charges and was bound over for trial.
