She probably keeps a diary so she can note down those little surprises that can happen. such this reported in one of todays papers

The day had started out much the same as any other for island shopkeeper Russell Town.

He had sorted the morning newspapers and dealt with the usual trickle of early customers.

And then Princess Anne popped by to ask if he could give the Queen a lift.

Mr Town, the only shopkeeper on the Hebridean island of Gigha, was happy to oblige. Once he got over the shock, that is.

Twenty minutes later he found himself collecting the Queen, who is on a cruise of the Western Isles, and ferrying her to the local gardens in his Peugeot people carrier.

He said: 'It was just so bizarre. One minute I was serving in the shop and the next I was sitting next to the most famous woman in the world.

'It took ages to persuade my friends and even my mum that I had given the Queen a lift. They all thought I was having a laugh at their expense.'

Mr Town, 42, was working at his store in Ardminish when he spotted Princess Anne outside on a push bike.

She walked in and asked if he knew of a village taxi which could take the Queen from Eilean Garbh beach three miles away to the island's Achamore Gardens.

When he explained there were no taxis on Gigha she asked if he could possibly help.

So 20 minutes later Mr Town picked up the Queen from Eilean Garbh beach, a stopping point on the royal summer cruise, and took her to the gardens.

'Princess Anne and her husband Tim Laurence cycled down from the ship with Peter Phillips and his girlfriend,' he said. 'They introduced themselves and asked if there were any local taxis.

'When I said Gigha didn't have a taxi service the Princess asked "Any chance of a lift?"

'I still can't believe it - it's quite amazing. I picked up three of them, the Queen, her lady-in-waiting and Princess Anne, who had cycled back to the ship by this time.

'The Queen was lovely. I thought I would give her a bit of peace and remained quiet but she was a real chatterbox.

'She was wearing black trousers, a blouse and headscarf.

'As soon as she got into the people carrier, she took off her headscarf and started asking me lots of questions about my family, about the local sights and about life since the community bought it from the landowner five years ago.

The Royal Navy ship HMS Argyll is protecting the yacht during the cruise and, as we drove past the frigate, the Queen said she hoped the men were off the boat getting some rest and relaxation.

'When I saw my daughter at the side of the road and pointed her out, the Queen waved at her.

People on the island knew she was here and were all waving at her as we passed by.

'She is very down to earth. I've never been an ardent royalist but I have always quite liked the Queen and now I have real respect for her. I didn't realise just how nice a person she is.'

After 90 minutes at the gardens the Queen asked to be taken back to the Royal yacht.

Mr Town suggested his friend, local bed and breakfast owner Don Dennis could help with the home run.

Mr Dennis took the royal party back to the beach as Mr Town followed behind with the Queen's security guards.

Mr Town, who moved to Gigha from Lancashire three years ago, said: 'It is an experience I will never, ever forget.

'My friends joked that I should have charged the Queen £12 for the run but shaking her hand at the end was honour enough, although I can perhaps put "By Royal Appointment" above my shop now.'

Gigha, situated off the west coast of Scotland, three miles west of the Kintyre peninsula, has a population of just 100.

A palace insider infromned me that Her Majesty The Queen has a ladies pistol in her hand bag which she would use as a last defence if her security failed her. You may remember that Her Majesty lived through the second world war and the invasion of England was a reality for these people.
