sorry if this song was already brought up but this song is awesome! it used to scare the crap out of me when i was little and in fact still does......

Spanish Train

There's a Spanish train that runs between
Gualdaqivir and old Seville.
And at dead of night the whistle blows,
And people hear,
she's running still.

And then they hush their children back to sleep,
lock the doors, upstairs they creep.
For it is said that the souls of the dead,
fill that train -
ten thousand deep!!

Well a railway man lay dying,
with his people by his side.
His family were crying,
knelt praying before he died.

But above his bed
just a-waiting for the dead,
was the Devil with a twinkle in his eye.
"Well God's not around,
and look what I've found,
This one's mine!!"

Just then the Lord Himself appeared
in a blinding flash of light.
And shouted at the devil,
"Get the hence to the endless night!!"

But the devil just grinned,
and said, " I may be sinned,
but there's no need to push me around.

I got him first
so you can do your worst,
He's going underground!"

"But I think I'll give you one more chance,"
said the devil with a smile.
"So throw away that stupid lance,
It's really not your style."

"Joker is the name, Poker is the game,
we'll play right here on this bed!
And then we'll bet for the biggest stakes yet;
The souls of the dead!"

And I said,
"Look out, Lord, He's going to win,
The sun is down and the night is riding in.
That train is dead on time,
many souls are on the line,
Oh, Lord he's going to win!"

Well the railway man cut the cards,
and he dealt them each a hand of five.
And for the Lord was praying hard,
for that train he'd had to drive…

Well, the devil had three aces and king.
And the Lord,
He was running for a straight.
He had a queen and the knave
and a nine and ten of spades,
All He need was the eight…

And the Lord called for more card,
But He drew the diamond eight,
And the devil said the Son of God,
"I believe you've got it straight".

So deal me one,
for the time has come to see,
who will be the king of this place.

But as he spoke, form beneath his cloak,
He slipped an other ace…

Ten thousand souls was the opening bid,
And soon went to on fifty-nine.
But the Lord didn't see what the devil did,
And He said, " that suits me fine."

"I'll raise you high, to hundred and five,
and forever put an end to your sins!"

But the devil let out a mighty shout,
"My hand wins!"

And I said, "Lord, oh Lord, you let him win,
The sun is down and the night is riding in.
That train is dead on time,
many souls are on the line,
Oh Lord don't let him win…"

Well that Spanish train still runs between,
Guadalquivir and old Seville,
and at the dead of night the whistle blows,
and people fear,
she's running still…

And far away in some recess,
The Lord and devil are now playing chess.
The devil still cheats and wins more souls,
And as for the Lord,
well,
He's just doing his best….

And I said,
"Lord, oh Lord, you've got to win,
The sun is down and the night is riding in.
That train is still on time,
oh my soul is on the line...
Oh Lord, you've got to win…"

i love these kind of lyrics. they are simplistic when ya read them, but sung they set up a little movie in your head.

Al Stewart

On The Border

The fishing boats go out across the evening water
Smuggling guns and arms across the Spanish border
The wind whips up the waves so loud
The ghost moon sails among the clouds
Turns the rifles into silver on the border

On my wall the colours of the maps are running
From Africa the winds they talk of changes coming
The torches flare up in the night
The hand that sets the farms alight
Has spread the word to those who're waiting on the border

In the village where I grew up
Nothing seems the same
Still you never see the change from day to day
And no-one notices the customs slip away

Late last night the rain was knocking at my window
I moved across the darkened room and in the lampglow
I thought I saw down in the street
The spirit of the century
Telling us that we're all standing on the border

In the islands where I grew up
Nothing seems the same
It's just the patterns that remain
An empty shell
But there's a strangeness in the air you feel too well

The fishing boats go out across the evening water
Smuggling guns and arms across the Spanish border
The wind whips up the waves so loud
The ghost moon sails among the clouds
Turns the rifles into silver on the border

On the border
On the border
On the border

Donald Fagen does a Graham Greene type lyric

THE GOODBYE LOOK

The surf was easy on the day I came to stay
On this quiet island in the bay
I remember a line of women all in white
The laughter and the steel bands at night

Now the Americans are gone exept for two
The embassy's been hard to reach
There's been talk and lately a bit of action after dark
Behind the big casino on the beach

The rules are changed
It's not the same
It's all new players in a whole new ball game

Last night I dreamed of an old lover dressed in gray
I've had this fever now since yesterday
Wake up darling they're knocking the Colonel's standing in the sun
With his stupid face the glasses and the gun

I know what happens
I read the book
I believe I just got the goodbye look

Won't you pour me a Cuban breeze Gretchen

I know a fellow with a motor launch for hire
A skinny man with two-tone shoes
Cause tonight they're arranging a small reception just for me
Behind the big casino by the sea

I know what happens
I read the book
I believe I just got the goodbye look

There's a lil story behind this song. My dads nickname was SugarBear. I can remember laying on the backend of his Mustang...a 64' in the summertime with him and my sister while listening to Johnny Horton Records, and looking up at the sky.

As we got older, he'd sing this song to us......he passed away in 99', soooo everytime I hear a Johnny Horton Song or a Bobby Bare song..it makes me think of him.

Ole Slew Foot by Johnny Horton

High on the mountain, tell me what do you see
Bear tracks, bear tracks, a lookin' back at me
Better get your rifle boys, before it's too late
'Cause bear's got a little pig and headed through the gate.

Well, he's big around the middle and he's broad across the rump
Runnin' ninety miles an hour takin' forty feet a jump
Ain't never been caught, he ain't never been treed
Some folks say he's a lot like me.

--- Instrumental ---

Saved up my money and I got me some bees
They started makin' honey, way up in the trees
Cut down the trees 'cause my honey's all gone
Old Slew Foot's done made himself at home.

Well, he's big around the middle and he's broad across the rump
Runnin' ninety miles an hour takin' forty feet a jump
Ain't never been caught, he ain't never been treed
Some folks say he's a lot like me.

--- Instrumntal ---

Well, winter's comin' on and it's twenty below
The river's froze over so where can he go
We'll chased him up to gully and we'll run him in the well
We'll shoot him in the bottom just to listen to him yell.

Well, he's big around the middle and he's broad across the rump
Runnin' ninety miles an hour takin' forty feet a jump
Ain't never been caught, he ain't never been treed
Some folks say he's a lot like me.

Some folks say he's a lot like me...

"Tribute", Tenacious D

[Spoken]
This is the greatest and best song in the world... Tribute.

Long time ago me and my brother Kyle here,
we was hitchhikin' down a long and lonesome road.
All of a sudden, there shined a shiny demon... in the middle... of the road.
And he said:
[Sung]
"Play the best song in the world, or I'll eat your soul." (soul)
[Spoken]
Well me and Kyle, we looked at each other,
and we each said... "Okay."
[Sung]
And we played the first thing that came to our heads,
Just so happened to be,
The Best Song in the World, it was The Best Song in the World.

Look into my eyes and it's easy to see
One and one make two, two and one make three,
It was destiny.
Once every hundred-thousand years or so,
When the sun doth shine and the moon doth glow
And the grass doth grow...

Needless to say, the beast was stunned.
Whip-crack went his Whoopy tail,
And the beast was done.
He asked us: "(snort) Be you angels?"
And we said, "Nay. We are but men."
Rock!
Ahhh, ahhh, ahhh-ah-ah,
Ohhh, whoah, ah-whoah-oh!

This is not The Greatest Song in the World, no.
This is just a tribute.
Couldn't remember The Greatest Song in the World, no, no.
This is a tribute, oh, to The Greatest Song in the World,
All right! It was The Greatest Song in the World,
All right! It was the best m*****in' song the greatest song in the world.
[2-part skat]
[Spoken]
And the peculiar thing is this my friends:
the song we sang on that fateful night it didn't actually sound
anything like this song.
[Sung]
This is just a tribute! You gotta believe me!
And I wish you were there! Just a matter of opinion.
Ah, ****! Good God, God lovin',
So surprised to find you can't stop it.
[Skat]
All right! All right!

In 1958, Sam Charters ventured to the small island of Andros in The Bahamas and there encountered the stunning guitar music of 47-year-old stonemason, Joseph Spence. The recordings Charters made that day revealed a master of startling originality, and earned Spence immediate recognition for his beautiful, unorthodox synthesis of rhythm and melodic improvisation. These earliest and most widely praised recordings are among the best traditional musics ever issued.

Roosevelt In The Land Of The Hummingbird

When Roosevelt came to the land of the hummingbird shouts of welcome were heard
Roosevelt came to the land of the hummingbird shouts of welcome were heard
His visit to their island is bound to be an epoch in local history
Definitely marking the new era, keeping Trinidad in America

For this great man jubilation, was evinced by the entire population
Friendship for the U.S.A. was shown and from his house the stars and the stripes were flown
For the state to open the gate to the president of these United States
In fact everybody was glad to welcome Roosevelt to Trinidad

We are privileged to see the democratic president of the great republic
With his charming and genial personality and his wonderful urbanity
We were struck by his modest style and we were intrigued by the famous Roosevelt smile
No wonder why everybody was glad to welcome Roosevelt to Trinidad

Now we understand that the president has just been on a visit to Brazil and the Argentine
Mr. Cordell Hull in attendance they took part in a peace conference
To stop war and atrocity and make the world safe for democracy

Coheend and Cambria are telling with every of their songs. They're telling their "sci-fi-fanatsy-love"-story across four LPs at which just (is that the right term?) the LPs two and three are releaes yet. Here an example for the lyrics from their song "Delirium Trigger":

Quote:
We're now, up here alone
Terror on the intercom
Can someone save us
Systems malfunction
Blast it this damn machine
Over and out captain

Something lurks
Creeps on the counter top
Somewhere behind you
Parasitic cyst
I can't stand to watch
It's coming up and out of your chest

Well, and then there are the two songs "Choroforme Perfume" and "Mercury Rising" by "From Autumn to Ashes". Although this are two songs, they belong together because of their lyrics.

Chloroforme Perfume

Quote:
The end result of so many meetings
Late night diners with no one eating
We sit in corners and sip burnt coffee
Count the tiles upon the ceiling
Skip this pretense and cut straight to dying
But don't beg me to keep your eyes from crying

You said so much without ever parting your lips
Past 3am and im still far from sleep
This is a habit that i cant break
And my only company
Is skipping stones

And the street lights flicker like this match in my hand
The street lights flicker like this match in my hand
And the street lights flicker like this match in my hand begging to strike
Beggin to strike

And I keep repeating but this payphone tel is stopped receiving
Flat out of change now im sure you wont accept the charges
Its all the same cause by the morning ill be half way to Colorado or some place like that

You said so much without ever parting your lips
Past 3am and im still far from sleep
This is a habit that I cant break
And my only company
Is skipping stones down this sub-suburban street

She keeps on asking so you think it hurts much to die
Well its hurting so much more to stay alive now
Shes gonna find out how much it hurts to die

She lifts her perfume up to death
Filling in my lungs
So ill pull in the deepest breath
And drop my head

and Mercury Rising

Quote:

How sad - this is what your life has
been reduced to - a single room apartment containing no more than a mattress.
The strings have been removed from the blinds and all the outlets have been
painted over. The television screen is streaked with blood smeared from your
knuckles as you were trying to punch it out but you underestimated your
strength, or maybe you just weren't trying hard enough. Startled by a knock
at the door you rise for the first time in two days to answer, but you can
only greet the visitor with one short statement. Hello my first name is
distance and I really don't care if I never wake up again. Hello my name is
distance and I really don't care if I never wake up again. And I really
don't care if I never wake up again. And I really don't care if I never wake up again.

On the LP, "Mercury Rising" foolows directly on "Chloroform Perfume" and the lyrics are spoken and screamed.

From The Kingston Trio

Some Fool Made a Soldier of Me
I remember when I was bare-footed boy.
Climbin' in a sycamore tree
But now I'm a little older, got a rifle on my shoulder,
Some fool made a soldier of me.

Some fool made a soldier of me, Ah-ha
And I ride in the rough cavalry
Got a pretty gal waitin' for me, while I rot here in the army,
Some fool made a soldier of me.

I told her we'd marry and build us a home,
And raise us a big family.
But she's given all her charms to a blue uniform,
Some fool made a soldier of me.

Some fool made a soldier of me, Ah-ha
And I ride in the rough calvary
The day's getting' hotter, I'm a-near out of water,
Some fool made a soldier of me.

I told General Custer I'm a-dyin' of thirst,
And the heat is a-getting to me.
But he said "Have no fear, there's a big river near"
Some fool made a soldier of me.

Some fool made a soldier of me, Ah-ha
And I ride in the rough cavalry
We'll get there in the mornin' to the Little Big Horn,
(Hey, General Custer, I think I see an Indian over there)
(Yeah, ask her if she's got a friend for me)
Some fool made a soldier of me.
