New life plan

3 years

Canada/ michigan. Either one.

But 3 years it is.

I would almost say that this move is set in stone.
In fact, I would be confident in saying so.

Breaking down our finances, and the misters retirement, we would reasonably be able to move with no less then 20,000.

So, as I put this life 'plan' in writting and use this thread for notes and sites..
I was wondering if anyone has ever changed their citizenship before?
And how would you do that ?

The mister has dual US/canada.. so he is no problem.
I dont. Jillian doesnt..

but he is , right now calling some place in Dallas.. I believe is a Canadian Embassy branch.. or something like that... . and is looking into the cost for changing Jillian..

Yeah, I think they're an endangered species, or something.

Like any other country, Canada would want proof that you and Bean would be self-supporting citizens.

I have a cousin who married a Canadian academic and she had no problems converting from being a citizen to being a subject. Of course, she was an adult.

shewolfnm - have you spent any time in Michigan in winter? I'd recommend that you spend at least two weeks there in late January or February before you commit to this plan.

You think you miss NM now?

Depending on where you end up in Canada, the climate and social environments can be quite variable.

I am thinking of going where my mother will end up.
Battle Creek / Kalamazoo area.
I believe that is in the southern point of michigan??

Oh yeah.. and you would have to come have to come hang out Sublime.. Cool
Good music, beer and a huge patio..
thats my plan. Smile

Canada is another location, and I believe that is going to be our ultimate goal.

Though, I am not so sure we will be able to afford to save up for it THIS year.
With rent of 510, that really dips into our pockets so much so that food banks may not be enough of a relief.

I am working on changing my time slots so that I dont have 2 hours in between clients where I need to rely on gas as much as I do now.

The bus isnt an option for me either sadly.

Forewarning:

If you're thinking at all of British Columbia, the greater Vancouver /Vancouver Island area currently has the highest house prices /rents in the country.

None of the larger cities in Canada are not that affordable in relation to comparable U.S. cities - at least in terms of housing.

For your husband to sponsor you, Shewolfnm, he's going to need to provide a number of financial guarantees.

You got it.

I am actually trying to buy a summer house (well a summer trailer) in Lawrence, MI which is 30 miles from Kalamazoo. Just having some trouble financing, it is incredibly difficult financing a trailer even if it is on three and a half acres of land. We might end up being neighbors!

What does that mean?

We are looking at the Montreal area. That is where he has extended family already.
My family is based in Battle Creek, and my mother will soon be moving up there herself, so we will have a network of people to help when we move so we can get a home, OR hop over the border and decide what we want to do there.

I am really feeling like Michigan should be a really good goal for us over all.
Canada sounds wonderful.. in a very fanciful way.. but I dont know enough about the country to make a really good decision right now.

But our minds are made up, and our savings just boosted to prepare for it... that we are leaving Texas in 3 years.

Doing a google search, what would be some really good key words to help me pull up information about Canada... ?

For an average house in Vancouver, it's been reported that a "nothing special" house is costing $500,000 Cdn. Shocked

Of the 3 largest cities in Canada, I've heard that Montreal is the most economical to live in. I believe it would help enormously if you spoke some French.

Take a look at this

Both Reyn & I posted links to the Canadian government. Here's one for the province of Quebec.

This one's an immigration service, but there's probably enough info there to make some decisions. Note that Quebec has a separate immigration process to the rest of Canada.
