Bill- In my development, (which has been in progress since 1961, and will not be finished for another 5-7 years) the original builders used to give the "under air" measurement in its flyers. When the hotshots who took over the development some years ago, they would list EVERYTHING as part of the total square footage. Somebody must have gotten after them, because now they list both figures.

Letty and Phoenix - thanks for the explanation, re: "Florida Room" (lanai). I'll have to ask my uncle, who lives in the general Orlando area, if he has one. Smile

By the way, Chai, this has turned into a heck of a nice thread. Well done!

thanks Reyn...but it was inspired by Walter.

Nimh...relating this to our other thread about in part socializing. Do you feel (in general) that someone living in a smaller place likes to be out and about more.

390 sq ft! even if I lived alone, I'd be walking into myself. I think I would have the feeling of wanting to get out of their more, and only use it for sleep.

Oh wait...did it have rooms, or was it an open loft? My friend in NYC has a 500 ft loft, and it didn't feel claustrophbic, even with 2 Jack Russell Terriers...on the other hand, one whole side of it was outside window, almost floor to ceiling, overlooking the river. That made it feel REAL open.

I like open spaces, both inside and out.

Our flat(my husband's and mine) is 1600 sq feet - pretty spacious for the two of us, by Bangalore standards. Cost us about $ 70,000 (I hope I got the rupee-$ conversion right). The average flat here is about 1000 sq ft large.

I have always grown up in tiny houses....rangin from 600-900 sq ft. My dad was never too rich. And I prefer small houses to big ones.

I have an 800 square foot 1-bedroom apartment - $675/month with electric included. It's a great price for the location.

Here's one of my many summer homes. I don't know...it's kind of small, think I need to put an addition on it.

Our home was built in 1955, and we bought in 1971. It was 1400 square feet, but during our residence here, we've expanded it to 1500 square feet, totally renovated both bathrooms and the kitchen.

I was ready to move to a "new" home after I retired in 1998, but my wife loves it here in Silicon Valley. It looks like we'll be staying here a few more years.

Miller, The value of our home increased 17-fold since we bought it. I'm not sure what keeps it going up, because in our area, home prices have continued its upward spiral. We see many homes sold for over one million in our city, and just a few years ago, we had none.

This is our kitchen-family room:

This is the most important room in the house; my computer room:

I live in a studio with 300 square feet. I moved in as a doctoral student. When I finished and got a Real Job (TM), I never looked for something larger because a) I liked it and b) I knew I'd move to America "soon". Seven years of procrastinating about America later, I'm still not really looking because I'm still moving "soon". But in the meantime, I've been buying so many books and CDs that I'm running out of space for shelves to store them. I can see the day when I have no choice but to move out. Not for me, mind you, just for the books.
