Rowling hints Harry Potter might die

Tuesday, June 27, 2006; Posted: 5:53 a.m. EDT (09:53 GMT)

LONDON, England (AP) -- Author J.K. Rowling said two characters will die in the last installment of her boy wizard series, and she hinted Harry Potter might not survive either.

"I have never been tempted to kill him off before the final because I've always planned seven books, and I want to finish on seven books," Rowling said Monday on TV in London.

"I can completely understand, however, the mentality of an author who thinks, `Well, I'm gonna kill them off because that means there can be no non-author-written sequels. So it will end with me, and after I'm dead and gone they won't be able to bring back the character'."

Rowling declined to commit herself about Harry, saying she doesn't want to receive hate mail.

"The last book is not finished. But I'm well into it now. I wrote the final chapter in something like 1990, so I've known exactly how the series is going to end," she said.

Some characters might die, but the blockbuster movie franchise lives on. Warner Bros. Pictures has announced that the fifth installment will be released in cinemas in July 2007.

In "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," directed by David Yates, the teenage Harry continues to battle the evil Lord Voldemort (again played by Ralph Fiennes) and his followers. Daniel Radcliffe is returning as the title character, and Emma Watson and Rupert Grint reprise their roles as Hermione and Ron. Oscar-nominated actress Imelda Staunton plays the malicious, frumpy Professor Dolores Umbridge, who tortures Harry.

In her Monday interview on the "Richard and Judy" show, Rowling said people are sometimes shocked to hear that she wrote the end of book seven before she had a publisher for the first book in the series.

"The final chapter is hidden away, although it's now changed very slightly. One character got a reprieve. But I have to say two die that I didn't intend to die," she said. "A price has to be paid. We are dealing with pure evil here. They don't target extras do they? They go for the main characters. Well, I do."

Rowling is the richest woman in Britain -- wealthier than even the queen -- with a fortune estimated by Forbes magazine last year at more than $1 billion.

Whatever she writes next, Rowling is sure of one thing: It won't be as successful as Harry Potter.

"I don't think I'm ever going to have anything like Harry again. You just get one like Harry."

Im not a huge fan but I enjoy the films. They are very dark especially the last on, seeing Hermione tied up under water was thoroughly traumatic, God knows how kids handled it.

Im in 2 minds as to whether Harry should die.In one way it would be lovely as he would be with his parents but then again I hope they wouldnt want him to die.

I dont mean this to sound like a sexual thing but the 3 main characters ahve a lovely bond/chemistry I want them all to marry each other and live happily ever after.

Id like Hermione and Ron to get together, so neither of them can die.

I think this is all to get more publicity - I don't think she will kill Harry Potter.

The theme of sacrifice, the death of the hero for the life of the world, is a staple of western literature.

It's not really a new revelation, this bit about Harry possibly dying... Rowling has been saying this for a while now. Ever since the release of Goblet of Fire, at least, she's frequently been pressed in interviews to reveal what will become of Harry and the kids after Hogwarts, and she consistently says that readers shouldn't be too quick to assume that Harry will survive Book 7.

Quote:
Harry/Jesus same thing.

It's an irresistible interpretation, considering all that talk in Half-Blood Prince of Harry being the "Chosen One."

I dont think that Harry will die because, for one thing, if JKRowling DID kill him off, everyone would be on her back saying things like "how could you do something like that" and also, from some of the things that JKRowling has said, she has seriously considered writing more than the 6 books she promised, and she might want to keep her options open. I also think that Dumbledore is not dead. I WOULD write why, but it would take up too much space. Below is a list of characters I think will die in the 6th book.

Neville-DEFININTLY. He has always been loyal to Harry, and he will end up saving his life.

Fred and/or George- I think that at least one of them will die.

Ginny- Maybe, I doubt it though

Mrs. Weasley or Mr. Weasley- One of them, but not both.

Hagrid- He is one of the only adult friends that Harry has left

I assume you mean seven books?

There is an FAQ on J. K. Rowling's website, and one of the questions is: "Will you write more Harry Potter books after the seventh?" Her answer:

If you mean more novels, I think it highly unlikely. I've got enough story for seven books and I never planned to carry the story beyond the end of book seven. I might do an eighth book for charity, a kind of encyclopaedia of the world so that I could use all the extra material that's not in the books... we'll see!

Again, I assume you mean the seventh book? Rowling has apparently said that two major characters die in the last book; assuming she's telling the truth, then not all of your predictions can come true...

I dont think it should be so devastating if harry does die(although I dont want any of them to die).
JK has said she wrote the ending about 15 years ago and it wont change.

I think HP has covered some topics not normally covered in childrens stories/literature.The themes in HP filsm have been quite dark, dealing with death, so if a main character is killed off it is just reflecting life.

Is it wrong to think Danial Radcliffe looks gorgeous in the new pics of the play he is in?!
It annoys me immensly that parents are criticizing Danial for being a bad role model just because he gets naked in the play.
Personnally Id tell my kids he is a good role model and like him, if you work hard you get far in life!

I don't think she'll kill Harry because then evil wins and that's a pretty darn sad message to leave kids with.

My vote for who dies:

Neville

Aunt Petunia

Voldemort and Harry have to kill each other. It's the only way.

He's the chosen one. Harry dies and comes back to life.

Where have we heard that one before?

hmmm, I just added a few names to my list of "who's going to die"

Aunt Petunia

Grawp

Dumbledore (he'll come back to life then die again)

Snape (He'll be killed by Voldemort when Voldemort finds out Snape is good. And Snape IS good. Trust me. HE IS!!! Okay, fine, I'll expplain. If Snape wasn't a good guy, then he would have told Voldy what was in the prophecy, and the death eaters wouldnt have had to go to the ministry of magic in the 5th book.)

Draco (did I already say that?)

Lupin (It HAS to be, love does'nt last in these books, in case you have'nt noticed)

I THINK thats it.

I think Harry will die, as will Voldemort.

Shrimpy, why don't you think Dumbledore is really dead? I don't believe it myself, but not for any particular reason. I know you said it would take a while to explain- can you do a quick synopsis?

Dumbledore is not dead!!!
Okay, well, in the 6th book, Harry is frozen, Draco's wand is at Dumbledore's chest, and Dumbledore is reasoning with Draco. Dumbledore says that Draco could fake his own death, which he is saying to Draco, as well as Harry. He is saying to Draco that Draco could "die"
but he's saying to Harry that he could fake his own death. Also, when Hagrid is taking Dumby's body to the white tomb, Dumby's body is covered. That is all I have to say on that subject, but if you wold like to know who R.A.B. is, look at my topic titled "I know who R.A.B. is!!!" In this topic you will FINNALLY find the answer to Everyone's question. (who is R.A.B.?) If you have ant Harry Potter questions, ask them in that topic. I have figured out so many things about Harry, that you wouldnt believe!
