How sad. He was a great reminder that not all avant-garde music was about nihilism, gloom and doom. I saw
Le Grand Macabre when San Francisco did it a few years ago and it was very heartening in a way that few other operas are. It was reassuring to see that someone who had seen the worst of the Cold War could still find hope in music.
The first time that I heard Ligeti's work was in the film, 2001- A Space Odyssey. I found that work very interesting. May he rest in peace.
