This is a product by DU PONT. It's called EVAC-U8, this device is a personal emergancy escape smoke hood which can provide 15 minutes of breathable air and eye protection. They are small enough to have in your desk at work or at home. They cost about $75 and can only be used once.

So would you use one, or would it freak you out?

Sounds like a good idea for a lot of folks. If a smokey situation arises and you need to escape this could be the answer...at least for 15 minutes. I wouldn't have any issues with putting on one of those, although in reality most times when a person needs something like that they can't remember where they left it.

Accidentally ignite the air and become a human blowtorch.

I guess I'm a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to breathing.

I'd sooner breathe through my ears than through my arse. The ear hair would filter it and it would not be stinky.

This is why I love A2K! Where else on the internet can one find such intellectually stimulating discussions on topics like whether it's preferrable to breathe through one's ear or one's ass?

They always have that sort of crap in the airline magazines. Look through the sales catalogs next time you fly - it is quite amusing what they try to sell. Never saw that some sort of crap any where else. Wonder why?
