rate your email provider

I've had hotmail, yahoo, gmail, college email address, and another one I can't quite remember. Some I liked more than others, but I have wondered if other people like what they have, and for what reasons.

How would you describe your email provider on the following issues...

1. What measures does your email provider take to keep spam out of your email account?

2. Can you take the emails that you want to save and organize them the way you want to - a way that makes sense to you?

3. Can you customize the look of your email?

4. Can you create a customized home page through your email provider and make it look the way you want?

5. Did you get the email address you wanted?

I'll start.

Google's gmail is the one I use presently. My description:

1. Gmail just has a spam folder that spam message automatically go into, however, you can't change the setting on how often the messages are deleted. If they can sort spam into a spam folder, why can't they just keep it out of the email altogether???

2. To organize email messages, you can't put them into separate folders. Google wants you to create "labels" on your messages and then just archive them into one giant folder, then search for something when you're looking for anything specific. And god-forbid you delete your "sent" messages, because anything connected to that "conversation" will also be deleted, even if it has a "label" on it.

3. No, you can't customize the look of your email in any way.

4. Yes, you can create a customized homepage with google, but you can't make it look nice.

5. No, I didn't get the email address I wanted. I wonder if there is any email provider that deletes unused accounts and allows you to obtain the unused email ID's. Every version of my name was taken already.

Poeple seem to love gmail, though, for some reason.

There is a good reason for keeping a spam folder hanging around for awhile. Sometimes a message that is NOT spam ends up in a spam folder. It is a smart idea to take a quick perusal of your spam folder every couple of days.

But that should be my choice. If I want to risk losing something that should have gone in my inbox (which hasn't happened even once in the year I've had the account), then it should be my choice to have it automatically deleted.

Which email do you use? Do you like it?

i have a buncha email accounts - a few Hotmail, a couple Yahoo, a couple GMail, and some others, as well as a half-dozen through my ISP. Most of 'em are specifically just for junk; about the only time I use one of those is to sign up for something or to place an online order, and I only check them when necessary to retrieve validation or confirmation info or order details or receipts. One Hotmail account is for relatively public correspondence, one Yahoo account and one Gmail account are primarilly for discussion groups in which I participate - those 3 get checked once a day, at least, and while there always will be some spam, there's really very little in those accounts, as I almost never use those email addresses for signups or ordering, or otherwise do anything that would put one of those account addresses on the web. My primary personal private email account, freinds and family only, is one of those through my ISP, accessed via Outlook, and regulated via a "White List" - if a sender's email address isn't on the list, the message goes directly to the trashbin; that account is never used for anything but direct freinds/family correspondence, no spam there at all. Just about any email client, such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, Thunderbird, and others, provide means for establishing filters which will sort your incoming email into folders you set up any way you want them.

Among all my email accounts, I'll typically receive many hundreds of emails per day, of which I'll actually only ever see a few dozen or so, and of those I do see, I'll usually open and read mebbe half. You can "Take Charge" of your email, but you've gotta do it, nobody else is gonna do it for you.

EmilyGreen- I use:

My Outlook Express E Mail- Family and important stuff.- I used to like it. Problem is, for years I did not get one piece of spam on it. As soon as my husband became reaquainted with an old friend of his, the guy started forwarding stupid stuff, with all the names attached. Now I get ads for Viagra and fake Rolex watches, on a regular basis.

Yahoo- Subscriptions, unimportant purchases, and other less vital things. Used to get loads of spam, until Yahoo clamped down on spammers. It is much better now.

Hotmail- A2K stuff- Don't use that much. Have never gotten any spam on it.

G Mail- Don't use it much

My Way- Correspondence from a club of which I am president- I like it, and I really need to use it more. The only problem. is that when I write a letter to the members of the club, and arrange it nicely in paragraphs, it comes out in a block. I wonder why?

Fastmail- Don't use much.

Yeah, yahoo really did clamp down on the spammers. Gmail is making changes that don't quite suit me, and I'm probably going to change back to yahoo.

I'm a bit bothered that yahoo is taking a turn towards the AOL style of things, and it attaches files all over your PC, and that's just not necessary. I think it only does that if you install the toolbar or the messenger, though.

Have not had that experience. I have the Google toolbar only, and that is more than enough for me!
