That's exactly what I thought the lyrics were when I listened to my sisters' records, one of which was:

Pardon me, boy Is that the Chattanooga choo choo? Track twenty-nine Boy, you can gimme a shine I can afford To board a Chattanooga choo choo I've got my fare And just a trifle to spare
You leave the Pennsylvania Station 'bout a quarter to four Read a magazine and then you're in Baltimore Dinner in the diner Nothing could be finer Than to have your ham an' eggs in Carolina

When you hear the whistle blowin' eight to the bar Then you know that Tennessee is not very far Shovel all the coal in Gotta keep it rollin' Woo, woo, Chattanooga there you are

There's gonna be A certain party at the station Satin and lace I used to call "funny face" She's gonna cry Until I tell her that I'll never roam So Chattanooga choo choo Won't you choo-choo me home? Chattanooga choo choo Won't you choo-choo me home?

Of course, it turned out to be "shovel all the coal in" Shocked

What lyrics have you misunderstood from any song past or present?

Laughing Dys, you didn't really think that's what the lyrics were, now did 'ya?

My mom used to sing a hymn that contained the words: "..was that somebody you. " I was a pretty big girl before I realized that it was NOT "was that sunbonnet sue..." Very Happy

Gautam, I gave you part of those lyrics...and I'll bet you saw Misread lyrics on Netscape "At Play" just as I did. It made me think of all the funny things we thought were actual words to songs...sorta like Silent Night. One kid thought that the line was Round John Virgin, instead of 'round yon virgin... Cool

One of the funniest ones I can recollect is George Micheal's "Let's go outside"...

The last line was "Just keep on funking".... and guess what I heard them to be Wink

Though I bet he purposely made it to be like that !!

I think one of my favorites of the traditionally misheard lyrics is "There's a bathroom on the right" instead of "There's a bad moon on the rise."

I see a bad moon arising.
I see trouble on the way.
I see earthquakes and lightnin'.
I see bad times today.

CHORUS:
Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

I hear hurricanes ablowing.
I know the end is coming soon.
I fear rivers over flowing.
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.

Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

Hope you got your things together.
Hope you are quite prepared to die.
Looks like we're in for nasty weather.
One eye is taken for an eye.

Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

I had forgetten that Credence Clearwater Revival did that song and I found out it was from Revelation Shocked I like "there's a bathroom on the right better." Razz

This one always got me:

Blinded by the light
Wrapped up like a duece? dueche? something in the night.

Could never figure that out and, quite frankly, have stopped trying.

"CAUSE SHE WAS BLINDED BY THE LIGHT
WRAPPED UP LIKE A DEUCE ANOTHER RUNNER IN THE LIGHT
BLINDED BY THE LIGHT
SHE GOT DOWN BUT SHE NEVER GOT TIGHT
GONNA MAKE IT THROUGH THE NIGHT"

I once read an explanation of "deuce" in those lyrics, but I can't find it online. Does anyone recall the official explanation?

Thank, dys. Sounds as though wrapped up like a deuce means "wild" or maybe "loser"

Every time I think I have the lingo firmly in place, there's a new code...ah, well, I just think of the song "Tears in Heaven"...nothing misread there.
Would you know my name
if I saw you in heaven?
Would you feel the same
if I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on
'Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven...
Would you hold my hand
if I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
if I saw you in heaven?
I'll find my way through night and day
'Cause I know I just can't stay here in heaven...
Time can bring you down, time can bend your knees
Time can break your heart, have you begging please...
Beyond the door there's peace I'm sure
And I know there'll be no more tears in heaven...
Would you know my name
if I saw you in heaven?
Would you feel the same
if I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on
'Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven...

goodnight my friends
