The Israeliteswas a number one in the UK in 1969 and followed by a string of smaller hits such as You can get it if you really want, 007 and It mek.
Although he never composed another song as popular and instantly recognisable as Israelites Dekker played a huge role in making raggae an acceptable and popular music in the UK, paving the way for artists like Bob Marley later in the 70s.
Desmond lived in SouthEast London, England.
Oh no!The Isrealites was the 2nd single I ever bought.
Yeah, I saw that, too sad. RIP Desmond Dekker.
I still like The Isrealites today as I did 38 years ago.
Jamaica Observer's report about his death
Trojan Records has set up a
Desmond Dekker Tribute page. You can leave your own comment.
Other songs, apart from Israelites, that Ive liked a lot:
You Can Get It If You Really Want
Pretty Africa
007 (Shanty Town)
A It Mek
Thanx to Material Girl, Nimh and Walter for those comments.
I particularly like the report from the Jamaican Observer as it told me many things about Desmond's back catalogue that I did not know.
Wonder if there will be a tribute cd with some of those early ska tunes on it
Desmond's death has been crazy for me. I've been listening to all of his songs on Napsterlinks. You can check out the link below, and see what songs are available on Napsterlinks. You can click on any song, and hear 30 seconds of it, unless you're registered and logged in with your email address.
