But, I dunno which one to buy. I guess I could go and listen in at a record store, but does anyone here have any suggestions about his albums? I own Mellow Gold and Seachanges. I like them both, but Seachanges a little more.
Any tips?
Try Guero if you haven't already.
I only own Seachanges LittleK, I think it was a bit of a departure for him so it's unlikely he has another album in that vein (mega wistful chillout).
I also bought the Loser single when it came out - love the b-side "MTV Makes Me Want To Smoke Crack".
Odelay and Midnite Vultures are also good.
Odelay is the only one apart from Mellow Gold that allmusic.com gives 5 stars too. Sea Change is 4.5 stars. Trust Infrablue.
.... and I thaught, you were talking about Jeff Beck
Oh, Walter! Even Beck is now old school... Jeff Beck is his grandfather (I still love Blow By Blow).
Hinge - is Beck Jeff's grandson for real? That would explain lots if it's true.
Thanks Infrablue, thanks hingegead!
We don't get much news-updates here in the insularity of our old people's home.
Walter <grin>. I hadn't realized Beck was already old school. How can he be, he's young and he's still putting out records.......
So. He is a scientologist. I had heard he was. Freaky.
Oy.... bedtime for me, it's nearly 3 am.
I've been a fan of his ever since I saw him live years ago. Far and away one of the best shows I've seen. He's a natural entertainer and seems as comfortable on stage as I am in my living room <grin>
Anyway, Odelay is definitely my favorite album of his since its release. If you like anything of his you'll probably dig it.
if you have a bit torrent program you candownload certain songs for free ( the entire song too!! ) and be able to listen to them before you buy..
LittleK--you must get MUTATIONS. It is essential for any Beck fan.
It combines the eerie folkiness of his early stuff and some of the later tracks on Sea Change, with some of the funk of Odelay.
It is his most creative, ecclectic work, I think.
Guerro is his only dissapointment, in my opinion. Because it sounds like Beck background music, like something you'd put on at a party while people are talking, whereas all the other albums totally suck me in.
Some MUTATIONS lyrics, off the top of my head:
It's so easy to laugh at yourself
When all those jokes have already been written
Seems like another vain attempt
To let yourself fall out of the oven
Love is a plague
In a mix-matched parade
Where the castaways
Look so deranged
When will children learn
To let their wildernesses burn?
And love will be new
Never cold and vacant.
Ok! Now when I have a spare 15 bucks, say 2008, I'll buy one.
(Never used the "post reply" button, but the little box isn't there...)
I was going to say what gargamel says, so let me second that. All in favor?
(If'n you like Sea Change, Mutations is prolly best bet. Fine album, too. A little quietude, a little psychedelia...)
Thanks everyone! Hey Pdog!!!!
