It's an old Dutch-Hungarian tradition - they do so, since around the 6th century Frisians saw Scottish kilts the first time.

That changed over time and distance ...

Its a striking kind of symbology, innit? The boys throwing water over the girls as a fertility / coming of age ritual ... subtle they dont do, here ;-)

But - pretty skirts, those folklore skirts. And the boys' boots are a fetishist's dream.
