I've been quite a fan of Dream Theater for a good number of years now. Before that, I was deep deep inside Metallica... but the sound they provided me appeared so basic and empty compared to what was presented to me next, progressive music.

Now, the original purpose of this thread is not to attack music genres, but rather to feed my need of getting to know new bands.

Under the progressive label (or similar), I have found and loved the following:

King X
Marillion
Spocks Beard
Transatlantic
Liquid Tension
Chroma Key
Nightwish - Sad
Rush
King Crimson

... and some others that I'm forgetting right now. So guys... any suggestions for new material?

Thanks!

The only band that matters is Tool... everything else just isn't good enough. Yes, many of those bands you listed kick ass, but Tool is ten times better than any of them. I guarantee it. However, your sanity is not refundable, and I do not assume any responsibility for any hallucinations or out-of-body experiences that you may have. *your warranty is void*

I've never listened to tool, and I'm with Blue on this one, how can you make a list of progressive rock without including Yes?

I remember listing to the song starship trooper by them when I was a youngster, my older brother made fun of me, later he came around.

My favourite prog bands have to be Rush, ELP, King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd, Dream Theater, Tool, Jethro Tull's prog work, Queen's 2nd album which is prog, and alot of the classic 70s stuff. Rush are my favourite prog band, I think La Villa Strangiato is one of the most well structured drum pieces of all time, Neil Peart is a true God!
But they aren't all out prog, and are often not classed as a prog band by some
Take care
