Welcome Lexxy, I agree about the joy of this thread.

Charley Pride had a memorable version of this song also.

Hank Williams
"Hank Williams I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive"

Now you're lookin' at a man that's gettin' kind-a mad
I had lot's of luck but it's all been bad
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive.

My fishin' pole's broke the creek is full of sand
My woman run away with another man
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive.

A distant uncle passed away and left me quite a batch
And I was living high until that fatal day
A lawyer proved I wasn't born
I was only hatched

Ev'rything's agin' me and it's got me down
If I jumped in the river I would prob'ly drown
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive.

These shabby shoes I'm wearin' all the time
Are full of holes and nails
And brother if I stepped on a worn out dime
I bet a nickel I could tell you if it was heads or tails.

I'm not gonna worry wrinkles in my brow
'cause nothin's ever gonna be alright nohow
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive.

(additional verses)
I could buy a sunday suit and it would leave me broke
If it had two pair of pants I would burn the coat
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive.

If it was rainin' gold I wouldn't stand a chance
I wouldn't have a pocket in my patched up pants
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive.

El Paso

Out in the West Texas town of El Paso
I fell in love with a Mexican girl.
Night-time would find me in Rosa's cantina;
Music would play and Felina would whirl.

Blacker than night were the eyes of Felina,
Wicked and evil while casting a spell.
My love was deep for this Mexican maiden;
I was in love but in vain, I could tell.

One night a wild young cowboy came in,
Wild as the West Texas wind.
Dashing and daring,
A drink he was sharing
With wicked Felina,
The girl that I loved.

So in anger I

Challenged his right for the love of this maiden.
Down went his hand for the gun that he wore.
My challenge was answered in less than a heart-beat;
The handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor.

Just for a moment I stood there in silence,
Shocked by the FOUL EVIL deed I had done.
Many thoughts raced through my mind as I stood there;
I had but one chance and that was to run.

Out through the back door of Rosa's I ran,
Out where the horses were tied.
I caught a good one.
It looked like it could run.
Up on its back
And away I did ride,

Just as fast as I

Could from the West Texas town of El Paso
Out to the bad-lands of New Mexico.

Back in El Paso my life would be worthless.
Everything's gone in life; nothing is left.
It's been so long since I've seen the young maiden
My love is stronger than my fear of death.

I saddled up and away I did go,
Riding alone in the dark.
Maybe tomorrow
A bullet may find me.
Tonight nothing's worse than this
Pain in my heart.

And at last here I

Am on the hill overlooking El Paso;
I can see Rosa's cantina below.
My love is strong and it pushes me onward.
Down off the hill to Felina I go.

Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys;
Off to my left ride a dozen or more.
Shouting and shooting I can't let them catch me.
I have to make it to Rosa's back door.

Something is dreadfully wrong for I feel
A deep burning pain in my side.
Though I am trying
To stay in the saddle,
I'm getting weary,
Unable to ride.

But my love for

Felina is strong and I rise where I've fallen,
Though I am weary I can't stop to rest.
I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle.
I feel the bullet go deep in my chest.

From out of nowhere Felina has found me,
Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side.
Cradled by two loving arms that I'll die for,
One little kiss and Felina, good-bye.

Rod3,

One of the things that has always drawn me to the song El Paso is the fiery guitar playing. That is Grady Martin, who left an indelible stamp on Nashville with his innovative picking.

Great stuff here's another one big on this side of the pond 44 years ago Rolling Eyes

DEVIL WOMAN
(written and performed by Marty Robbins)
from the 1962 Columbia LP DEVIL WOMAN, CL 1918

I told Mary about us
Told her about a great sin
Mary cried and forgave me
And Mary took me back again
Said if I wanted my freedom
I could be free evermore
But I don't want to be
And I don't want to see
Mary cry anymore

Oh devil woman
Devil woman let go of me
Devil woman let me be
And leave me alone
I want to go home

Mary is waitin' and weepin'
Down in our shack by the sea
Even after I've hurt her
Mary's still in love with me
Devil woman it's over
Trap no more by your charm
'Cause I don't want to stay
I want to get away
Woman let go of my arm

Oh devil woman
Devil woman let go of me
Devil woman let me be
And leave me alone
I want to go home

Devil woman, you're evil
Like the dark coral reef
Like the winds that bring high tide
You bring sorrow and grief
Made me ashamed to face Mary
Barely had the strength to tell
Skies are not so black
Mary took me back
Mary has broken your spell

Oh devil woman
Devil woman let go of me
Devil woman let me be
And leave me alone
I want to go home

Running along by the seashore
Running as fast as I can
Even the seagulls are happy
Glad I'm coming home again
Never again will I ever
Cause another tear to fall
Down the beach I see
What belongs to me
The one I want most of all

Oh devil woman
Devil woman don't follow me
Devil woman let me be
And leave me alone
I'm going back home

Ohh my Gosh...How did I miss this thread? I love country music, and especially love the classics...there are to many for me to name...

Bobby Bare

The most famous of the voodoo queens that ever existed
Is Marie Laveau, down in Louisiana
There's a lot of weird ungodly tales about Marie,
She's supposed to have a lot of magic potions, spells and curses....

Down in Louisiana, where the black trees grow
Lives a voodoo lady named Marie Laveau
Got a black cat's tooth and a Mojo bone
And anyone who wouldn't leave her alone
She'd go another man done gone

She lives in a swamp in a hollow log
With a one-eyed snake and a three-legged dog
She's got a bent, bony body and stringy hair
If she ever seen y'all messing round there
She'd go another man done gone

And then one night when the moon was black
Into the swamp come handsome Jack

A no good man like you all know
He was looking around for Marie Laveau

He said Marie Laveau, you handsome witch
Give me a little a little charm that'll make me rich
Give me a million dollars and I tell you what I'll do
This very night, I'm gonna marry you
Then It'll be another man done gone

So Marie done some magic, and she shook a little sand
Made a million dollars and she put it in his hand
Then she giggled and she wiggled, and she said Hey, Hey
I'm getting ready for my wedding day

But old handsome Jack he said goodbye Marie
You're too damned ugly for a rich man like me
Then Marie started mumbling her fangs started gnashing
Her body started trembling and her eyes started flashing
And she went another man done gone.

So if you ever get down where the black trees grow
And meet a voodoo lady named Marie Laveau
If she ever asks you to make her your wife
Man, you better stay with her for the rest of your life
Or it'll be another man done gone

THIS ONE:

North To Alaska

Performed by Johnny Horton

*Way up north,way up north
North to Alaska
They go north, the rush is on
North to Alaska
They go north, the rush is on

Big Sam left Seattle in the year of
With George Pratt, his partne and brother Billy too
They crossed the Yukon River
And found the bonanza gold
Below that old white mountain
Just a little southeast of Nome

Same crossed the majestic mountains
To the valleys far below
He talked to his team of huskies

As he jushed on through the snow
With the northern lights a-running wild
In the land of the midnight sun
Yes,Sam McCord was a mighty man
In the year of 1

**Where the river is winding
Big nuggets they're finding
North to Alaska
They go north, the rush is on

(Repeat *)

George turned to Sam with his gold in his hand
Said, Sam you're a-lookin'at a lonely, lonely man
I'd trade all the gold that's buried in this land
For one small band of golden lace
On sweet little Ginnies hand

Cause a man needs a woman to love him all the time
Remember, Sam, a true love is so hard to find
I'd build for my Ginnie a honeymoon home
Below that old white mountain
Just a little southeast of Nome

(Repeat **)

I could get started and not stop...lol So many of the older singer/songwriters have been forgotten...and they deserve to be revered more....

Remember... Johnny Duncan's "Slow Dancing"... Johnny Lee's "Cherokee Fiddle" , David Frizzell & Shelly West , John Conley with is "Rose Colored Glasses", Buck Owens and his "Act Naturally"? Merle..Waylon, with his wife Jessie Colter?

Speaking of Merle...this is my favorite song of his....

Are the Good Times Really Over?

I wish a buck was still silver it was back when the country was strong
Back before Elvis and before the Vietnam War came along
Before the Beatles and "Yesterday" when a man could still work and still would
The best of the free life's behind us now and are the good times really over for good

And are we rolling down hill like a snowball headed for hell?
With no kind of chance for the flag or the Liberty Bell
I wish a Ford and a Chevy would still last ten years like they should
Is the best of the free life behind us now and are the good times really over for good

I wish Coke was still cola and a joint was a bad place to be
It was back before Nixon lied to us all on TV
Before microwave ovens when a girl could still cook and still would
The best of the free life's behind us now and are the good times really over for good

And are we rolling down hill like a snowball headed for hell?
With no kind of chance for the flag or the Liberty Bell
I wish a Ford and a Chevy would still last ten years like they should
Is the best of the free life behind us now and are the good times really over for good

Stop rolling down hill like a snowball headed for hell
Stand up for the flag and let's all ring the Liberty Bell
Let's make a Ford and a Chevy that will still last ten years like they should
The best of the free life is still yet to come and the good times ain't over for good

Ok, I'll stop now...hehe

All Over Again - Johnny Cash

Every time I look at you I fall in love, all over again
Every time I think of you it all begins, all over again

One little dream at night and I can dream all day
It only takes a memory to thrill me
One little kiss from you and I just fly away
Pour me out your love until you fill me

I wanna fall in love beginning from the start, all over again
Show me how you stole away my heart, all over again

One little dream at night and I can dream all day
It only takes a memory to thrill me
One little kiss from you and I just fly away
Pour me out your love until you fill me

I wanna fall in love beginning from the start, all over again
Show me how you stole away my heart, all over again

All over again, All over again, All over again, All over again
All Over Again

I turned my kids onto Marie...they are so cute singing it...lol
The other day, my youngest whose 7, was asking his dad to turn up the radio in the truck,...It was playing Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire". LOL I told my husband, "How many kids his age know that song?" And he can sing it..word for word...lol

I always said my kids were "Different"...but I mean that in the sense that we have instilled in them a love of the classics...music and movies. They know Johnny Horton, Cash, Haggard, Hank Sr, Patsy...Willie's...older songs, to every old Western that we can get our hands on...lol

Here's a song off Marty Robbins' Gunfighter Ballads album in which the sad lyrics are perfectly matched to a haunting melody relying on a minor chord.

They're Hanging Me Tonight

When I hear the rain a comin' down it makes me sad and blue
Was on a rainy night like this that Flo said we were through.
I told her how I loved her, and I begged her not to go
But another man had changed her mind so I said goodbye to Flo.

Alone within my cell tonight my heart is filled with fear
The only sound within the room is the falling of each tear.
I think about the thing I've done, I know it wasn't right
They'll bury Flo tomorrow, but they're hanging me tonight,
They're hanging me tonight!

That night he came and took my Flo and headed in to town
I knew I had to find this man and try to gun him down
As I walked by a dim cafe and I looked through the door
I saw my Flo with her new love and I couldn't stand no more,
I couldn't stand no more.

I took my pistol from my hip and with a trembling hand
I took the life of pretty Flo and that good for nothin' man
That good for nothin' man!
I think about the thing I've done I know it wasn't right
They'll bury Flo tomorrow, but they're hanging me tonight,
They're hanging me tonight.

Hank Williams - May You Never Be Alone Like Me

Like a bird that's lost in maiden flight
I'm alone and oh so blue tonight
Like a piece of driftwood on the sea
May you never be alone like me

I believed the lies you told to me
When you whispered dear,I'll worship thee
Now here I am all alone and blue
All because I love no one but you

I have left my friends,i left my home
When you promised to be mine alone
Now you're gone our love could never be
May you never be alone like me

In the bible, god's own words do say
For every wrong some day you'll have to pay
I'll pray the lord to set me free
May you never be alone like me

Goodbye little darling

Goodbye little darling we're parting
Parting don't always mean goodbye
Although we have to part, you're always in my heart
Goodbye little darling goodbye

Goodbye little darling,I'll miss you
Miss you like the stars would miss the sky
I hate to see you go,I'm going to miss you so
Good bye little darling ,goodbye

Goodbye little darling,i love you
I'll love you till the day I die
Will you dream a dream of me,where ever you may be
Goodbye little darling,goodbye

Yep...

Quote:
Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Cramer grew up in the small town of Huttig, Arkansas, teaching himself to play the piano. After finishing high school he returned to Shreveport where he worked as a pianist for the Louisiana Hayride radio show. In 1952, he made his way to Nashville, Tennessee at a time when the use of piano accompanists in country music was growing in popularity. Before long Cramer would become one of the busiest studio musicians in the industry, playing piano for stars such as Elvis Presley, Brenda Lee, Patsy Cline, The Browns, Jim Reeves, Roy Orbison, Don Gibson and the Everly Brothers amongst many others.
