hey guys
this is a weird question but it relates to some english h/w i got recently:
i have to compile a cd of songs about humanity's relationship with nature and how we're getting out of touch with it - like in the film blade runner and book brave new world if you've read/seen them. also songs relating to issues in these, like loss of individuality, corporisation, urbanisation, no nature, no emotions etc.

here are some things i already have:
big yellow taxi - counting crows
'Another Brick in the Wall' and 'Money' by Pink Floyd
im forever blowing bubbles - gershwin song
barbie girl - aqua
come fly with me - dean martin/michael buble

thanks Smile any other ideas welcome!

You want sad and poignant?

The best one I can think of is Neil Young's "Aurora Borealis" (also known as "Pocahontas")

Aurora Borealis, the icy sky at night
Paddles cut the water
In a long and hurried flight
From the white man.... to the fields of green
And the homeland.... we've never seen.

They killed us in our tepee
And they cut our women down
They might have left some babies
Cryin' on the ground

But the firesticks.... and the wagons come
And the night falls...... on the setting sun.

They massacred the buffalo
On the corner from the bank
The taxis run across my feet
And my eyes have turned to blanks

In my little box..... at the top of the stairs
With my indian rug.... and a pipe to share.

I wish a was a trapper
I would give thousand pelts
To sleep with pocahontas
And find out how she felt

In the mornin' ....on the fields of green
In the homeland..... we've never seen.

And maybe marlon brando
Will be there by the fire
We'll sit and talk of hollywood
And the good things there for hire
And the astrodome and the first tepee
Marlon brando, pocahontas and me
Marlon brando, pocahontas and me
Pocahontas.

(if you decide to include this on your list, try to download the "unplugged" version if you can)

Husker Du - Newest Industry

Been through mass destruction once, but once was not enough
Said we want a second chance, and all they say is tough
A world where science went too far, there's no way to survive
Why can't we get this thing straightened out, i want to stay alive

They burned and bombed the east and north and there's no place left to go
The sun belt's overcrowded, so let's annex mexico
The peso's only worth a dime, but they've got all that land
No need for a civil war, we know they'll understand, right?

Is that how you like it?

Factories left unattended, crumbling to the ground
We tried to keep them running, but there's no more oil around
We used it all to fight a war that neither side could win
Vietnam was little league compared to where we've been

Now we live in caves and huts, and we don't have pay tv
And everyone is signing up for the newest industry
Standard oil goes solar power, all try to make a buck
So i'll sit around and smoke cigarettes, and i'll babble "what the f#ck?

Spirit of the Age - Hawkwind!

I would've liked you to have been deep frozen too
and waiting still as fresh in your flesh for my return to Earth
But your father refused to sign the forms to freeze you
Let's see you'd be about 60 now,
and long dead by the time I return to Earth
My time held dreams were full of you,
as you were when I left; still underage
Your android replica is playing up again it's no joke
When she comes she moans another's name

But that's the spirit of the age,
That's the spirit of the age...

I am a clone, I am not alone
Every fibre of my flesh and bone is identical to the others
Everything I say is in the same tone
as my test tube brother's voice
There is no choice between us,
If you had ever seen us,
You'd rejoice in your uniqueness
and consider every weakness something special of your own
Being a clone, I have no flaws to identify
Even this doggerel that pours from my pen,
has just been written by another twenty telepathic men,
word for word, it says:
"Oh, for the wings of any bird, other than a battery hen".

If A Tree Falls - Bruce Cockburn

rain forest
mist and mystery
teeming green
green brain facing lobotomy
climate control centre for the world
ancient cord of coexistence hacked by parasitic greedhead scam -
from Sarawak to Amazonas
Costra Rica to Mangy BC hills -
cortege rhythm of falling timber

what kind of currency grows in these new deserts
these brand new food plains?

if a tree falls in the desert does anybody hear?
if a tree falls in the desert does anybody hear?
does anybody hear the forest fall?

cut and move on
cut and move on
take out trees
take out wildlife at a rate of a species every single day
take out people who've lived like this for 100,000 years
inject a billion burgers worth of beef -
grain eaters - methane dispensers -

through thinning ozone
wave fall on wrinkled earth
gravity, light, ancient refuse of stars
speak of a drowning
but this, this is something other
bust monster eats dark holes in the spirit world
where wild things have to go
to disappear
forever

if a tree falls in the desert does anybody hear?
if a tree falls in the desert does anybody hear?
does anybody hear the forest fall?

Gawd, I'm on fire today.

Way Of The World - Max Q

You are born into this world
Looking down the barrel of a gun
And those who hold the gun
Want you to work fast and die young
And if you don't work
If you don't obey
They'll make you live in fear till your dying day
Those who govern hold the gun to your head
With religions, corporations, proud of blood
They've shed

CHORUS:
Whether it's God or the bomb
It's just the same
It's only fear under another name
(x2)

And the corporate snakes coming in to feed
On that pathetic fact known as human greed
Skin and bone being raked over those hot coals
This dump never seems to give time for human soul
And all those things that we have learnt
No time for questions, you'll just get burnt
You'll just get burnt

(CHORUS x2)

And those words crush you flat
Like your skull's under a brick
And the fear's so damnned strong
That it makes you sick
And you can see right through those eyes
That make you fear, that make you lie
And you're taught to hold high
Yet you wonder why
Dumb values forced upon you by the
Living lie

(CHORUS x5 to fade
