I loved John Lanchester's debut novel 'The Debt to Pleasure'. His prose is deft and complex, his facts on food spot on, and his main character a true devilish delight. I was wondering if anyone else had read this book. It is a true romp, and a fantastic character study. One link here is a quoted passage from the book, and one a review, with many links:

A thumbs up and a thumbs down, well, it is definitely not everyone's cup of tea, so to speak Smile I might add that the incredilbe pretentiousness of the narration does establish the character's personality very nicely.

Yes, like "Kitchen Confidential", where Antony Bourdain show just how much of a tosser he really is (in a gentle way), the arrogance and pretention of the first person narration shows huge traces of being loathsome.
