DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT HISTORY . . .

I thought i'd like to see a thread where those of us sufficiently advanced in fogeyism post our favorite R&B tunes from the 50s and 60s . . . so i'll start it off . . .

Wonderful World

-- Sam Cooke

Don't know much about history
Don't know much biology
Don't know much about a science book
Don't know much about the French I took

But I do know that I love you
And I know that if you love me too
What a wonderful world this would be

Don't know much about geography
Don't know much trigonometry
Don't know much about algebra
Don't know what a slide rule is for.

But I do know that one and one is two,
And if this one could be with you,
What a wonderful world this would be.

Now i don't claim to be an "A" student,
But I'm trying to be.
'Coz maybe by being an "A" student baby
I can win your love for me.

Don't know much about history
Don't know much biology
Don't know much about a science book
Don't know much about the French I took.

But I do know that I love you,
And I know that if you love me too,
What a wonderful world this would be.

Latatatatatatahuwaah (history)
Ohwoewoe (biology)
Latatatatatatahuwaah (science book)
Ohwoewoe (French I took)

But I do know that I love you,
And I know that if you love me too,
What a wonderful world this would be.

Treasure Of Love

A treasure of love, is easy to find
It´s waiting for you, if your hear,ar,art isn´t blind
A treasure of love, is not very far
It glows like fire and it shi-i-ines, like a star

It´s stronger than diamonds and worth more than gold
This is a treasure that never grows old
The treasure of love is found on no chart
To find where it is just look in your heart

It´s stronger than diamonds and worth more than gold
This is a treasure that never grows old
The treasure of love is found on no chart
To find where it is just lo-a-ook in your heart

Lawdy Miss Clawdie - Lloyd Price

Oh, now lawdy lawdy lawdy, Miss Clawdy,
girl, you sure look good to me.
Well, please don't excite me, baby,
tho' it can't be me.

Because I give you all my money,
girl, you just won't treat me right.
You like to ball in the morning,
don't come back until the night.

I'm gonna tell my mama, lawd, I'm gonna
tell her what you been doing to me.
I'm gonna tell everybody that I'm
down in misery.

Well, now lawdy lawdy lawdy, Miss Clawdy,
girl, you sure look good to me.
You just wheeling and rocking, baby,
you're just as fine as you can be.

Well, so bye bye bye bye, baby,
girl, I won't be trouble no more.
Goodbye, Clawdy, oh darling,
down the road I'll go.

One of Clyde's hits was this song by Brook Benton and Jimmy Williams:

A Lover's Question

Does she love me, with all her heart
Should I worry, when we're apart
it's a lover's question, I'd like to know.

Does she need me, as she pretends
Is this a game, well then will I win
It's a lover's question, I'd like to know

I'd like to know when she's not with me
If she's still true to me
I'd like to know when we're kissing
Does she feel just what I feel,
And how am I to know it's really real.

Oh, tell me where, the answer lies
Is it in her kiss or in her eyes
It's a lover's question I'd like to know.

I'd like to know when she's not with me
If she's still true to me
I'd like to know when we're kissing
Does she feel just what I feel,
And how am I to know it's really real.

Oh, tell me where, the answer lies
Is it in her kiss or in her eyes
It's a lover's question I'd like to know.

I am on the lookout for a really good McPhatter compilation album. Even incomplete collections take a little searching. Wish Bear Mountain Family would do him.

Long Lonely Nights

Long, long and lonely nights
I cry my eyes out over you
Wond'ring if I did right
And why you left me with a broken heart

Oh, long, long and lonely nights
Oh, how I miss you, my dear
Please, please, come back to me
How I wish you were here

As I go along my lonely way I visualize your face
When I pass through (yeah!) my doorway
What's left for me to face?

Oh, long, long and lonely nights
I guess you're never coming home
Long, long and lonely nights
Ever since you've been gone

As I go along my lonely way I visualize your face
When I pass through (yeah!) my doorway
What's left for me to face?

Oh, oh, oh, long, long and lonely nights
I guess you're never coming home
Long, long and lonely nights
Ever since you've been gone

Please, please, come back to me
You've been gone too long

One of my all time favorites...One of the greatest voices I have ever heard. Otis Redding was no slouch either...

Chain gang

( Sam Cooke )

That's the sound of the men
They are working on the chain gang, huh
That's the sound of the men
They are working on the chain gang
That's the sound of the men
When they're working on the chain gang

All day long you hear them, pooh
I'm going home, just one of these ole days
Man, i'm going home to see my woman
For my love's so dear
But that means why
I gotta work right here now, huh

And that's the sound of the men
They're just working on the chain gang
That's the sound of the men
They're working on the highways and the biways
That's the sound of the men
Working on the highway and biway
All day long they're going, pooh

Man, i'm going home to see that woman
For my love's so dear
I gotta see the woman
For my love's so well
But that means why
I gotta work right here now, huh

Now that's the sound of us mens
When we're working on the chain gang
Oh, it's allright now, hoo
Out there

That's the sound of the men
When they're working on the chain gang, ha
That's the sound of the men
When they're working on the chain gang
All day long you hear them, pooh

Man, i'm going home one of these ole days
Man i'm going home
I got to see the woman
Whom my love's so dear
But that means why
I've gotta sit right here now, ha

Now that's the sounds of the mens
Working on the chain gang

Working, we're working
Ah, we're working man
Got to be working
Oh, every day we work a little bit stronger
Every night, man, a few bit longer
Got to be working, man
The time is going up
We got to be working, man...

Laverne Baker - I Cried a Tear

I cried a tear because of you
I cried a tear because we're through
I cried a tear what else could I do
But cry and sigh for love of you

I felt a tear fall in my heart
You fooled me so I wasn't smart
I can't believe that we must part
Come back to stay let's make a new start

I cried a tear because of you
I cried a tear because we're through
Please make my dream of you come true
Don't make me cry a tear for you
Don't make me cry a tear for you

A classic, by Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers . . .

Why Do Fools Fall in Love?

Oooooo wah, oooooo wah, ooooo wah, oooooo wah,
ooooo wah, oooooo wah, Why do fools fall in love

Why do birds sing so gay
And lovers await the break of day
Why do they fall in love
Why does the rain fall from up above
Why do fools fall in love
Why do they fall in love

Love is a losing game
And love can be a shame
I know of a fool, you see
For that fool is me
Tell me why
Tell me why

Why do birds sing so gay
And lovers await the break of day
Why do they fall in love
Why does the rain fall from up above
Why do fools fall in love
Why do they fall in love

Why does my heart skip a crazy beat
For I know it will reach defeat
Tell me why
Tell me why
Why do fools fall in love

Honey Hush

by Lou Willie Turner

Ah let 'em roll like a big wheel
In a Georgia cotton field
Honey hush

Come in this house, stop all that yackety yack
Come in this house, stop all that yackety yack
Come fix my supper, don't want no talkin' back

Well, you keep on jabberin', you talk about this and that
Well, you keep on jabberin', you talk about this and that
I got news for you baby, you ain't nothin' but an alley cat

Turn off the waterworks, baby, they don't move me no more
Turn off the waterworks, baby, they don't move me no more
When I leave this time, I ain't comin' back no more

Honey hush

Come in this house, stop all that yackety yack
Come in here woman, stop all that yackety yack
Don't make me noivous1, 'cause I'm holdin' a baseball bat

Singin' hi-yo, hi-yo silver
(hi-yo, hi-yo silver)
Hi-yo, hi-yo silver
(hi-yo, hi-yo silver)
Hi-yo, hi-yo silver
(hi-yo, hi-yo silver)
Hi-yo, hi-yo silver
(hi-yo, hi-yo silver)
Hi-yo, hi-yo silver
(hi-yo, hi-yo silver)
Hi-yo silver away!

A one hit wonder with a great hit...

Bobby Hebb

Sunny

Sunny, yesterday my life was filled with rain.
Sunny, you smiled at me and really eased the pain.
The dark days are gone, and the bright days are here,
My Sunny one shines so sincere.
Sunny one so true, I love you.

Sunny, thank you for the sunshine bouquet.
Sunny, thank you for the love you brought my way.
You gave to me your all and all.
Now I feel ten feet tall.
Sunny one so true, I love you.

Sunny, thank you for the truth you let me see.
Sunny, thank you for the facts from A to C.
My life was torn like a wind-blown sand,
And the rock was formed when you held my hand.
Sunny one so true, I love you.

Sunny, thank you for the smile upon your face.
Sunny, thank you for the gleam that shows its grace.
You're my spark of nature's fire,
You're my sweet complete desire.
Sunny one so true, I love you.

Sunny, yesterday my life was filled with rain...

I read it through and through
And my girl never fails to say
If there is any work for me
And then I go back to the house
I hear the woman's mouth
Preaching and a crying
Tell me that I'm lying about a job
(That I never could find)

Shaaa, na-naa-da, shaaa, na-naa-na-da
(Baa-doo)
Shaaa, na-naa-da, shaaa, na-naa-na-da

Shake, Rattle And Roll

by Charles E. Calhoun

Get outta that bed, wash your face and hands
Get outta that bed, wash your face and hands
Well, you get in that kitchen, make some noise with the pots 'n pans

Way you wear those dresses, the sun comes shinin' through
Way you wear those dresses, the sun comes shinin' through
I can't believe my eyes, all that mess belongs to you

I believe to the soul you're the devil and now I know
I believe to the soul you're the devil and now I know
Well, the more I work, the faster my money goes

I said shake, rattle and roll, shake, rattle and roll
Shake, rattle and roll, shake, rattle and roll
Well, you won't do right to save your doggone soul

Yeah, blow Joe!

I'm like a one-eyed cat peepin' in a seafood store
I'm like a one-eyed cat peepin' in a seafood store
Well I can look at you till you ain't no child no more

Ah, shake, rattle and roll, shake, rattle and roll
Shake, rattle and roll, shake, rattle and roll
Well, you won't do right to save your doggone soul

I get over the hill and way down underneath
I get over the hill and way down underneath
You make me roll my eyes, even make me grit my teeth

I said shake, rattle and roll, shake, rattle and roll
Shake, rattle and roll, shake, rattle and roll
Well, you won't do nothin' to save your doggone soul

Shake, rattle and roll!

I know what you are saying though.
