If you were a reader of comic books back in the '50s and '60s, I bet you'd remember some of
these classic ads below.

In Junior High a guy had a pair of the x-ray glasses in study hall. I was pretty sure they didn't work, but the rat wouldn't let anyone else look. In spite of my better judgement, I was envious.

I never ordered them though, because my Mom would have known what I wanted them for....

I recall most of the ads. One you missed is to sell seeds for the American Seed Company.

Thanks for your interest, guys! They were fun, eh?

Edgar, if you go to the link at the bottom of my post, you
will find that ad there.

Did you have a favourite?

The Bobby Benson ad reminds me, the first time I ever heard of Don Knotts, he was a regular on the Bobby Benson and the B Bar B Riders radio show. He played a character named Windy. Judging by his voice, I had him pictured as a grizzled old coot like Walter Brennan. He was actually a young man at the time.

I only had favorites in that I looked forward to the ones with characters I liked, such as Red Ryder. Now way I was getting any of that stuff, so I didn't dwell on them in that way.

I saw one in Mad, or something similar when I was really young. Exciting stuff like hand granades - oh, and "Imagine the looks on your friends faces when they discover the alligator in the swimming pool." I thought they were serious

And how much White Salve did you have to sell to win a bicycle, again?

I always envied the children who had the sea monkeys. But they aren't kosher. Dunno what the Talmud says about unkosher pets, versus unkosher food, in the house.

I notice the above ad small print at the bottom says, "Caricatures shown not intended
to depict Artemia Salina".

http://www.hlasek.com/foto/artemia_salina_6908.jpg

They're rather taking a lot of "artistic license" here, aren't they?

Just how much truth is in their advertising? Boom?

Looks like to me you get what you pay for.

oh I wanted sea monkeys so bad.

I really thought they'd look like the pictures. Especially the girl sea monkey.

I wanted the ant farm and exray glasses too.

I could have look at the sea monkeys with my exray glasses. that would have been cool.

It's interesting how we look back at the things from our childhood with "adult eyes", isn't it?
