Wonder Bread is a North American brand of extremely soft white bread.
It was originally produced by Taggart Baking Company of Indianapolis and debuted on May 21, 1921 after "blind" promotion with ads that only stated a "Wonder" was coming on May 21, 1921. It was named by Taggart Vice President Elmer Cline who was inspired by the International Balloon Race at the Indianapolis Speedway resulting in the red, yellow and blue logo.
Tagart was purchased by Continental Baking in 1925 which made Wonder Bread a national brand and added "It's Slo Baked" to the logo.
In the 1930s Continental Baking began shipping Wonder Bread in pre-sliced form, one of the first companies to do so. Unsliced bread returned for a while during World War II due to metal shortages in the production process.
During the 1940s Continental Baking began adding vitamins and minerals to Wonder Bread, as part of a government-sponsored program of enriching white bread. This development is credited with greatly reducing the incidence of the diseases beriberi and pellagra. By the 1960s Wonder Bread was advertised with the slogan "Helps build strong bodies in 12 ways," referring to the number of enrichments.
Wonder Bread is known to several generations of youngsters as being almost infinitely compressible.
In 1986, the lower-calorie Wonder Light bread was introduced.
In 1995, Continental Baking was bought by Interstate Bakeries Corporation. In 2004, Interstate Bakeries declared bankruptcy, putting the future of Wonder Bread in some doubt.
On a personal note, I admit to judging cultures by the bread they eat which leads me to make obnoxious judgments about american culture. Where did we go wrong?
isnt wonder bread that brand that had the synthetic growth hormone?
It's the brand that practically sags under it's own weight because it's so soft.
I love naan.
What's that say about me?
naan a thing..!
da dum dum .. TISSHH
That stuff is pure junk. It tastes like library paste. The only way to have good bread is to bake it yourself. Since I am not about to do that, I buy a whole grain bread called, "Health Nut". At least it has a decent flavor.
Can I assume you'll be doing the comedy club all week, shewolf?
It is the best bread for sausage wraps, for those unwilling or unable to utilize tortillas.
That's about the only good thing about it.
Oh, and kids'll eat it if they have a fetish about only eating things that are white.
Two of my favorite establishments wouldn't be the same without Wonder Bread.
Catfish Heaven and Tee's Ribs N' Things.
At Catfish Heaven they hook you up with the tenderest fried catfish, served on...Wonder Bread. Just catfish, wonder bread, and grape Kool-Aid. Maybe beans or slaw on the side--that's all they do at that tiny roadside shack.
As for Tee's...Wonder Bread is pretty damn good when it has served as a sponge for that delicious BBQ you just ate. Most BBQ I've had in the south goes on Wonder Bread.
In short, screw all of you!

I dont know about the ENTIRE club
thats a lotta condoms..
Yum to Wonder Bread.
It's a treat to me.
Makes me think I'm Heidi, finally with the rich family.
Ugh, ehBeth, wonder bread is not bread; it's not even food.
Phoenix, you might want to try Orowheat's "Best Winter Wheat." I eat it like cake. It is SO full of roughage, like eating one's back yard chopped up: whole grains, seeds, leaves, weeds, twigs, everything. And toasted it's just heavenly.
Wonder bread, Miracle Whip, Velveeta slices........THAT's a sandwich!
LOL
That was a fave as a child. Now I switch between potato bread and multigrain breads.
I think a lot of my love of wonder bread <which I treat myself to once every coupla years> is that I had twig and whole grain breads as a child
When I went to university and learned about canned soup, and margarine, and Koogle, and cheezwhiz - man, it was processed food paradise.
The hamburgers were all about healthy, homemade foods. mrs. hamburger didn't just make the chicken soup, she made the noodles for the chicken noodle soup.

Dys, I bet you agonized whether to put this thread in the Food or the History forum, right? Then, since you couldn't make a decision, it landed here.
What's for supper tonight?
well rain my first thought was to put in the "I am my own worst enemy you are what you eat" forum but I couldn't find it.
Lasagna is what's for dinner.
