America Online Inc. has launched an intensified legal assault on junk e-mail by filing five lawsuits against more than a dozen individuals and companies accused of being major purveyors of "spam."
AOL, the nation's largest Internet service provider, with 27 million subscribers, said the targets of its suits were responsible for sending its members an estimated 1 billion pieces of spam that resulted in more than 8 million complaints. The unsolicited messages contained such things as pornographic images, body-enhancement offers, and diet and financial schemes.
I particularly like the bill proposed by Charles Schumer which would create a "do not spam" registry, much like the junk mail and junk phone call registry that is now in effect.
What do you think?
Sounds like a good thing for the folks that have this problem. Spam is something I do not have to deal with, lucky I guess. And no I do not know why it do not get any.
Joanne- If you never subscribe to anything, you won't get spam. I have one account that I use for subscriptions (Yahoo). I get spam there up the wazoo. My hotmail account gets spam once in a blue moon. I don't have supscriptions there. My Outlook Express E Mail never gets any spam!
Phoenix, AOL is also being sued by the Univesity of California, because Steve Chase and another high company official earned over a couple hundred million on stock while the UC lost half the value of the investment in AOL/Time Warner from $800,000,000 to half. c.i.
