now I have a very broad taste in music but I was a little confused by the title of this thread, I was expecting to hear something like Ozzy Osborne
Not really for me but I gave it a try
Why is he the prince of darkness?

Because his songs are often dark. One that comes to mind is called Wall of Death. Many of songs deal with loss. There is more a European flavor rather than a British flavor to his lyrics, darker and more brooding than the Brits are (don't count the Scots: they're simply depressed).
June Tabor, a sort of Queen of the Damned herself, often sings his songs.
Richard is one of the world's great guitarists.

plainoldme ~ well, I only listened to 'Banks of the Nile', but I liked it! It reminded me a lot of music from 'River Dance'.
Thanks so much for introducing Mr. Thompson to us!
