I recently purchased a fantasy novel called Eragon. I had heard it was good and decided to make the buy, as it was at a good price. I get it home, I'm flipping through the pages and what do I find?

Chistopher Paolini wrote this book at the age of 15-17!! Shocked
And now, at age 19, he's got the second book just released and is working on the third in this trilogy
Wow! That is truly immpressive!

His parents quit their day jobs to help him travel the country and market his work.

I found his books thus far to be pleasant but not outstanding. I'm looking forward to what he'll be able to write in a few years.

Yes, I found Eragon to be quite good for a 15 y.o., but pretty derivative of the other pieces in the genre.

Not that that is a fatal flaw; just an observation.

I haven't read him, but I'm a wee bit jealous. Lucky bugger. Wait. Actually, that would have it's downside. My world is okay again.

Very Happy

Well, the possible downside:
Parents hoping the work will cash in and he'll help the family?
Having ridiculous parents?
Not having time to piss around playing sports and foolin' around w/ friends?

*shrug*

You goddamn belligerent drunk! Why don't you go find another thread to pick a fight in!

(picks kicky up by the collar and waist and hurls him out the window[from what I've seen, he looks kinda small])

So...how was the book? Any good?

Have you ever read JT Leroy? He was quite young too (still is)

He has quite a following, but personally, I see the horrible things he went though, but it doesn't make him a genius, as some people claim.

Crazy Diamond--

He was home schooled--I believe somewhere in the wilds of Montana.

I read both of his books.

While I did find them good, the second book to the point of not being able to put it down, I did notice a lot of similarities among other fantasy books. I can't name any off hand though.

Yes, it is very derivative. It uses Hrothgar from Beowulf, the dwarven and elven languages are both very, very similar to Tolkien's, and many other things like that.
