My dog has roots in Oz. I can use his bark to make tea.

i think murphy's makes it harder to see the punchline coming, but it also lessens the payoff a bit. a question of feeling out the prognosticative abilities of the audience before coming to a final decision, methinks.

Yes - the dilemma always being will the verdampften smeggers know enough bloody Shakespeare to be amused at all?

Some of my best witty allusions go way above many people's heads, these days...

I know the smegger I wrote this little piece of doggerel for never got the Lear and Sonnet allusions, for instance!

Meant it was no fun at all .....

Squib
My heart is sad, for one has called me weird
Who once, to him, in wiser guise appeared.
The world is mad, shall weirdness, then, seem bad?
Or, in this world, shall wisdom show as mad?
If folly's wise, and wisdom wears her bells -
( The wise speak lies, and truth what folly tells ) -
Then all is bleak, and all's a blasted heath,
I'll folly speak, while yet I live and breathe!
How, 'gainst mad background, shall my motley show,
(If, deck'd with pride, in motley I do go?)
In folly wise I shall show forth my pride!
With brightest gold my motley shall be pied!
(I'm sure you'll think I o'er-react a tad -
Shall I be mannerly when you are bad?
Our lease on Earth is all too short a rental,
I shall speak soft and low when you are gentle!)

LOL Sozobe!!!

The thing is, if I may be serious for a second, that, in my view, the whole sub-structure of shared clture is going - or, at least, is changing dramatically.

It used to be that one could assume, in educated folk, a knowledge of literature and classical myths and so on - now, of course, this was an elite and doubtless elitist thing, (and I only ever knew a wee bit of it) but it sure makes for lots of fun in wordplay and silly doggerel, as it once made a whole series of images and associations possible in serious literature.

Now we still have a shared culture in many cases - but it is a very different one - and more ephemeral I suspect.

Who, of course, is to say 'tis better or worse? It is certainly different, though.

Probably on the wrong digression, this.

Patio said:" oh, those veins have been cut off here in america for quite some time, and we do all right with it! a little dizzy, perhaps, but that's to be expected."
