Apologies to Hank Snow, the Singing Ranger.

I have searched everywhere to find a short story titled:
"How Beautiful are thy Feet Wearing Shoes." The title is an allusion to The Songs of Solomon in the Bible and I think that's why it made be difficult to locate on the web. (even Phoenix couldn't find it) Rolling Eyes

A brief gist of the plot: A young backwoods girl is kidnapped by an escaped inmate from an asylum. The man does not harm the girl, but rather quotes beautiful poetry to her including the song from Solomon.
Although she is rescued, her life is changed forever by this brief encounter with beauty, making it impossible for her to return to life in the dull mountain community.

I do hope that someone can help me locate this short story.

Sounds like something Eudora Welty might have written...

D'artagnan, Thanks for the lead. I don't think it's Welty, although her "A worn Path" was a favorite of mine. (strange, the name of the old woman in the story was Phoenix). I had thought Ring Lardner, but can't find any short story of his that included the story of which I speak.

The plot (and Bibical reference) definitely has a Southern Gothic ring to it, Letty. It's not an area of expertise for me, though...

If you're not familiar with Raymond Carver, that's probably not it...

Did a Google search, nothing. (I know, hubris to think I could find it if Phoenix couldn't, but I had some ideas.)

Do you read the New Yorker short stories regularly? Do you have any specific short story collections? Any leads? I've SO read this. (Bonking head...)

Found a this as well on Alan Marshall, an Australian writer. It's about halfway down the page. I found a copy of the book on Amazon, but no real description.

I'll keep looking.

This is the closest that I can find, but I don't think that it is the one that you want:

Sooz, I was rather young when I read this, and at that time I didn't pay much attention to authors. My sister is the one who usually turned me on to things of this nature, and I've already e-mailed her and half the population of the world Very Happy

Phoenix Shocked Home is the hunter--home from the beach. I'm gonna keep trying.

Thanks, Sugar. Putting our heads together(even though we may bang them methodically against the wall) will help us resolve the unresolvable
