blank brain: What's the name of this book?!

A few years ago I read an excellent book which I want to refer to a friend of mine. It would be perfect for her. She'd love it.

I only remember the general feel and story of the book. No character names, nor the title. Very frustrating. Here's the main idea....

A family led by an overbearing Pastor father moves to Africa to live as missionaries. There are several sisters. They tell their stories about life in America and in Africa. It touches on so many ideas beautifully: religion, politics, family relationships.

Someone please help! Sad This book was a big deal when it first came out. I got it at the library in the express aisle.

Oh oh female author Joyce Carol Oates or something but not her Lorrie Moore??? Oh I know it now it's gonna drive ME crazy...

Haven't read it but saw it and wanted to...

I'll see what I can turn up.

I think it was the same year as "Bee Season" by Myla Goldberg as I'm seeing them side by side in my mind's eye...

Shocked

Can we brainstorm?

It's written by a female novelist who I like, I've read other books by her so this wasn't her first one. Thinking in the category of Margaret Atwood, Jane Smiley, Lorrie Moore, none of thos are right though.

The paperback for "Bee Season" came out in 2001, book probably first came out in 2000.

Do you have any more ideas/ tidbits?

Yes, for sure a female author. I think she may be American? Early 2000's sounds right to me too.

Other details...
The book is seperated into the various accounts of the different sisters. One of the sisters is a sickly sort, very introverted.

Bible...bible something soz! It's on the tip of my head Surprised

There is a lot of exploration on the deep, deep differences in beliefs and worldviews.

I'll keep thinking. You're helping a lot

Several of her other books deal with an American Indian child adopted by a white, single (?) mother. This woman has also published at least one book of essays, one of which dealt with laboratory sea creatures, in tanks far inland, keeping the rhythm of the tides.

That I didn't know Noddy. I'd love to read the one about the indian child growing up white. This woman did a good job on this book.

Do you know who she is or what the book is called?

The book was quite thick if I remember correctly. It had a yellow? cover.

Now that I've seen the cover, I can see the "Bee Season" link:

Similar covers, and the same conceit (the cover is a photo of a book...)

Similar colors, I meant, not covers, though of course covers too...

Is that even the same font?

Brains are weird, eh? (No comment, Gussie.)

Nighty night.

Yeaa, and the cover is yellow like I remembered! I'm interested in these other books of hers now too.

Now I can pass the torch on to my friend. Razz
