There are so many songs that have been done to death.
Twelve million versions: and how many of us even know where they come from?
I thought it might be fun to name a few songs that have become, or were popular, that have interesting origins. Or strange/excellent versions that you have liked.
We'll see if this thread keels over or what Smile

There is this great song called 'Wuthering Heights'. I first heard it played by Angra; and tonight I came across a Pat Benatar version of it! I'm wondering if anyone knows the Original version of this song? Who wrote it/first played it? How many versions can I find?
So far I like the Angra version best, but PB rocked it.

I liked Fleetwood Mac's The Chain. Some other group did it better, but I can't remember the name of the group or who was first.

It was written and originally recorded by Kate Bush and it appears on her debut album 'The Kick Inside' c1978. Of course the original is the best. Pat Benatar's voice is technically superior (she trained as an opera singer) but it's Kate's song and her voice is the tool she composed it on. I also prefer the instrumentation on the original (mostly acoustic piano and lush strings. Haven't heard the Angra version.

Roger: The Chain. God, that sounds so familiar to me.
I'm gonna download that now:)

Hinge: TY! That's awesome. Now I definetly have to check out the original. Yes, Pat B. really shows her stuff in that song. I didn't know she was trained in opera (which makes me feel so great bc I have always loved her).

I remember PB used to always chuck a cover on her early albums. I'm sure she did a John Cougar Mellencamp song on one, and an Alan Parsons song on another. And of course my favourite version of the Beatles 'Helter Skelter' was in there too.

Well, if you want a song with interesting origins, try the 1930's Rodgers and Hart tune, Blue Moon. A real romantic type song of the era, with strings and the whole bit.

In 1961, when rock was just starting, the Marcels did a speeded up doo-wop version which set the song on it's ear. There was virtually no relation between the Marcel's version and the many versions of the song to that time. As rock was reviled by the music establishment at the time, it was considered a scandal and a sacrilege against two great songwriters.

Check out the Marcels' version and any of the versions prior to that, (save the Elvis version I have not heard), and see what I mean. It caused quite a stir.
