Garg. Hugh Prestwood wrote some lines that capture those road songs:

We were rolling through the Rockies
We were up above the clouds
When a station out of Jackson played that song

And it seemed to fit the moment
And the moment seemed to freeze
When we turned the music up and sang along

And there was a God in Heaven
And the world made perfect sense
We were young and were in love
And we were easy to convince

We were headed straight for Eden
It was just around the bend
And though I have forgotten all about it
The song remembers when

great song about the road panz, a fave song of mine about bands on the road is by the kinks, called appropriately enough "the road"

The Road
The Kinks

Sitting alone on my hotel
Looking in the mirror wondering, "well,
After all this time you never thought you'd still be out on the road?"
Like a gypsy I was born to roam
Like a wanderer with no fixed abode
I think about the friends I've left behind on the road

Well, the road's been rocky along the way
It's been a long, hard haul on the motorway
But if it gets too smooth it's time to call it a day

(On the road)
The bed and breakfasts and the greasy spoons
(The road)
The loser bars and the noisy rooms
(The road)
The casualties who did too many lines
(The road)
Wasted talent on women and wine

I think of all the friends I've left behind
Whenever it's time to get back out on the road

Started playing blues in a coffee bar
I took a trip down Charing Cross Road
With my imitation Gretsch guitar
And my head full of songs and my eyes full of stars
I saw a band called the Rolling Stones
I thought, "that's it, I'll get a band,
I'm leaving home, I'm out on the road."

The motorways all over this land
(The road)
Far away places like Wigan and Birmingham
(The road)
Didn't have no name, didn't have any fans
(The road)
Didn't have no money so we slept in the van

All those early gigs we ever played
Sometimes we were lucky if we even got paid
On the road
Pete played on the bass guitar
Liked to get around, mixing with all the stars
But Mrs. Avory's child was all fingers and thumbs
But solid as a rock, setting time on the drums
While Dave the Rave hit the rock 'n' roll riffs
Yours truly strummed away with a slightly limp wrist
On the road

Everyday is when I can't get used to it
Everyday is when I can't get away
Another day, another freeway to face
That's the road

Well, life is a road, it's a motorway
And the road gets rocky along the way
But if it gets too smooth it's time to call it a day

(On the road)
Jimi Hendrix, The Who, the Led Zeppelin and Free
They took the road so it's alright by me
Some are survivors, some are debris
If you play in a band that's the road that you take
Living in it, eating in it, sleeping in it
You wake up in the morning, what do you see?
The road

Life is a road, it's a motorway
Lost a lot of good friends along the way
All the families and homes that I've left behind
To the wives and the lovers and friends who had their time
I say, "you take your road and I'll take mine."
(You take your road and I'll take mine)
You take your road and I'll take mine
(You take your road and I'll take mine)

Life is a road, it's a motorway
And the road gets rocky along the way
But if it gets too smooth it's time to call it a day

(On the road)
Observed all the various phases from
Flower power, heavy metal and acid rock
And still all the critics keep saying
"Are they still around? When they gonna stop?"
It's just the dedicated followers of fashion who like putting down
All the well respected men who came dancing and are still on the road

Sometime I get suicidal
Now everyone is a rival
Different cars, different bars and hotels
Corporations, big business and egos
When it all gets too bad I think back
When we were all each other had
When we started out on the road

And there's gas in my tank and I've still got a way to go
Another hotel, it's time to check out soon
As I look around the room
I think of all the friends I've left behind
On the road

Hey, Panzade... glad you liked that bit from Lyle Lovett -- I wish he toured in the PNW more (he'll be in Florida this weekend). I think he is amazingly talented. Did you know today is his birthday? He's 48.

Gargamel, I don't think I know that one, but it is certainly evocative. The Kinks' song reminded me of Dire Straits and a couple favorites from, I think, 1978 -- seems like it ought to be earlier but that time has sort of coalesced in my mind <shrug>:

You get a shiver in the dark
It's been raining in the park but meantime
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie double four time
You feel all right when you hear that music ring

You step inside but you don't see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down

And...

We gotta install microwave ovens
Custom kitchen deliveries
We gotta move these refrigerators
We gotta move these colour TV's

"I guess I should've known
By the way you parked your car sideways
That it wouldn't last."

Never quite understood that line but it sounded good. And profound.

Prince passed me by like a little sliver of purple rain. I think thw hoo-haw about his name/symbol made it very easy for me to dismiss him. I heard somebody talking about him once and she said he smelled better than anyone else ever. That made me wonder.Very Happy

He leans forward and you can smell him. It is just like the band said: he smells of flowers, music and innocence. I smell of lager. Eventually, he says this:

"I don't say much."

Here's one of my favorite bits from Bonnie Raitt with a nod to the rainy weather this week:

Sittin' in front of your house, like rain in early dawn, workin' on a love letter. Got my radio on.

Got my eye on your window pane and I smoked a lot of cigarettes.
Mercy, mercy but love is strange and you haven't even kissed me yet.

thinking of Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits I remember this line;
Quote:
And my conductress on the number nineteen
She was a honey
Pink toenails and hands all dirty with money
Greasy hair easy smile
Made me feel nineteen for a while

It's only when I heard his songs done by others that I GOT it.
Try"When You Were Mine" by Cindi Lauper or Mitch Ryder.

When you were mine
You were kinda sorta my best friend
So I was blind (so blind)
I let you fool around
I never cared (didn't care)
I never was the kind to make a fuss
When he was there
Sleeping inbetween the two of us

Here's some more Dire Straits I like:

It takes love over gold
And mind over matter
To do what you do that you must
When the things that you hold
Can fall and be shattered
Or run through your fingers like dust

from Love over Gold

All the late night bargains have been struck
Between the satin beaus and their belles
Prehistoric garbage trucks
Have the city to themselves
Echoes and roars of dinosaurs
They're all doing the monster mash
And most of the taxis and most of the whores
Are only taking calls for cash

from Your Latest Trick

there's lots more great lyrics from Dire Straits. Really poetic stuff...

Cool.... a brand new member chimes in with Dire Straits! Very poetic... mostly from Mark Knoeffler, I think.

Welcome to a2k, napier. Does your name have anything to do with Napster?

Nothing at all, just a play on my name. Thanks for the welcome. Just came across a2k searching for lyrics of an obscure song half an hour ago. Great site! Funny how I never came across it before . Gotta love Google! Very Happy

Some love a2k, some hate it... Check out the Bill Casselman threads, all two of 'em. Shocked

I hope you found the lyrics for your obscure song, Napier. If not, considering posting a new topic here that asks for help. Peeps are likely to check it out and help if they can over the course of the day. It is easy to post a new topic. Just stay in this "Music & Lyrics" forum and click on "New Topic." It'll guide you right through -- very intuitive stuff. (Note: that poll stuff is totally optional... just skip right by that.)

But they just don't rock 'em like he does. (Cyndi's version was cute tho)

You jump in front of my car when you,
you know all the time that
Ninty miles an hour, girl, is the speed I drive
You tell me it's alright, you don't mind a little pain
You say you just want me to take you for a ride

Crosstown Traffic - Jimi

Now when I was just a little boy
Standin' to my Daddy's knee ...

Born on the Bayou - John Fogerty

Trailer for sale or rent
Rooms to let fifty cents
No phone no pool no pets
I ain't got no cigarettes
Ah but, two hours of pushing broom
Buys a eight by twelve four bit room
I'm a man of means by no means

Damn. I love Roger Miller's "King of the Road." Used to be a high school drinking song for me and my hometown buddies.

I go back to a dingy watering hole in Milwaukee on holidays and ritually cue that song up on the jukebox. Eight songs for a dollar!

Roger could write 'em

4-H and FFA on a field trip to the farm
Me 'n' a friend sneak off behind
This big old barn where we uncovered a covered-up moonshine still
And we thought we'd drink our fill
And I swallered it with a smile
*Bllll-bbbb*, I run ten mile

Jukebox 'n' sawdust floor
Sumpin' like I ain't never seen
And I'm just going on fifteen
But with the help of my finaglin' uncle I get snuck in
For my first taste of sin.
I said "Lemme have a big old sip"
*Bllll-bbbb*, I done a double back flip

TRANSCRIBER'S NOTE: *Bllll-bbbb* is impossible to spell.
It's a ululation of the lips and
tongue similar to a "raspberry."

Have you seen the new juke boxes that are hooked up to the internet? I've yet to find a song they can't play.
