are going to be changed to .XXX to keep kids safer online? Rumor has it that this is trying to be passed and was very curious to see if this is true -- anyone know?
Personally, I think this is a great idea for kids and adults -- would prevent kids from accidently coming across things they do not see. What do you think?
Hahahah! I haven't heard this. Trust me- it ain't gonna help that much. People working with marketing gets money for how many web surfers are redirected to a site. They'll find a way. Where there's a will there's a way.
But, I still think it's a great idea.
being changed to Dot XXX instead of DOt COM?
oh yeah..
that will keep kids away..
it will make it easier I think.
but- anywho. hehe
Those that control domain names have introduced a new domain name extention, .xxx The hope is that porn sites will start to use this domain to allow them to be easily identified and blocked by parents etc.
However they cannot force sites to use the domains, they can still buy a .com if they like. Those that have already bought a .com are unlikely to ditch it and start using .xxx, as it will cost them a fortune in lost traffic.
Oh really? They won't make them switch? Well I know it might cost them a lot but i think that it should be mandatory -- I know that kids will still see porn but some kids accidently come across it like if you do Edit [Moderator]: Website removed -- I haven't done it but a friend of mine said it is a porn site. If all are switched to .xxx then it will prevent kids from accidently coming across it, liking it and then wanting to revisit -- they will just be tempted to revisit.
It is a start to keep kids safer online and I know that they can still be victims but that is where talking to kids about the dangers is important -- it is such a scary place out there
I agree...this wont make kids safer at all, there will always be predators and greedy money makers who dont give a damn who they affect...
A prime example a few months back I typed in the word 'Toni & Guy' which is a high profile chain of 'Hair salons' and up popped all these graphic pictures of some chic called Toni and all these Guys!...so what does that tell you...at the end of the day a parent should constantly supervise their child while on the net to avoid such things.
Note that there is strong opposition to the xxx TLD (top level domain) on both sides of the aisle.
The religious right object to it largely on the grounds that all things xxx offend them and some on the left are making some dumb slippery slope arguments saying that it might make educational sites about sex unavailable through censorship (same argument they use against library filtering systems).
Anywho, the creation of this TLD has been postponed under pressure from the government.
It's really silly, the proposal wouldn't do much to filter porn (unless it became illegal to operate porn on a .com, which won't happen) , the fears of the right of "legitimizing" online porn are just daft and the mumblings on the left that it would cause legitimate educational sites to be filtered is simply idiotic.
It's one of the silliest disputes I've seen.
KiwiChic, it is unfortunate that they will continuously be victims -- did you know that :
Four out of every five children receive inappropriate spam E-mail touting get-rich-quick schemes, loan programs, and pornographic materials, according to a study released by Internet security provider Symantec Corporation.

Pretty crazy, huh?
I think that this is really important for parents to pay attention to -- parents need to talk to thier kids so they will know how to respond if ever put in this position

Please tell me I'm not the only one that saw the inherent humor in that.
Childish? Yes. Stupid? Yes. Still funny in a silly way? Yes.
I think the .xxx domain is a brilliant idea and a long, long time overdue.
After all isn't it a bit odd that the biggest business on the internet is unrepresented by it's own top level domain ?
