Hello again, folks...
I’m trying to identify an obscure English‑language family‑fantasy TV movie, probably from the early–mid 1980s (color, about 90 minutes). It was definitely NOT religious and did NOT have “angel” in the title.
Plot details (very distinctive):
• A few children discover a man living alone in a shack.
• He appears to be a stone statue at first.
• When touched, he moves, scaring the children.
• He has visible grey, birdlike wings — ragged, missing feathers.
• He is depressed, alcoholic, and losing hope.
• As he regains self‑worth, his wings slowly heal and regrow feathers.
• He can slow or stop time and prevents a few disasters.
• A child (boy) tries to force him to fly by stepping off a cliff.
• The man believes he can’t fly anymore, hesitates, then chooses to try — and rescues the boy mid‑fall.
• A child (either the mother or baby sister) is hospitalized; he eventually heals her.
• Final scene: he flies through clouds toward a bright white, misty city in the sky, revealed gradually as he approaches.
Other details:
• The actor looked very much like Alan Alda (tall, thin, expressive face, 2–3‑day stubble), but was probably not Alda.
• The children found better clothing for him after cleaning him up (his old clothes really smelled bad).
• The movie was digitized — I had a downloaded copy years ago (possibly from Archive.org or early torrent packs).
• It felt like a Canadian or Australian family‑fantasy TV movie, but more likely Canadian based on tone, effects, and costuming.
I also recall one scene in particular -- the children are cleaning him up, and one gave him a bottle of mouthwash. At first he swishes it in his mouth, then he swallows. The girl is alarmed and says, "You're not supposed to SWALLOW it!" at which the man retorts, "Well then, what's the POINT?"
Does anyone recognize this film?
@jespah,
Thanks, but it's not. "Michael" is more of a comedy-fantasy, and we know the angel is the Archangel Michael. In this movie, I think the man (angel?) is not named, and we aren't sure if he is really an angel or a being with supernatural abilities. We aren't really sure why he is on Earth, or if he's in exile. Maybe self-imposed or conditional exile.
Here is what I got from AI:
The Boy Who Could Fly, which shares thematic parallels with your memory, or more accurately, the obscure 1985 Canadian television movie The Understudy (also released or known in some regions as The Man from Nowhere or simply distributed in early digitized packs under the title The Winged Man). However, your exceptionally specific plot details—right down to the exact mouthwash dialogue—perfectly match a legendary "lost" television movie that has been highly sought after in internet movie-identification forums.The movie you are describing is Mr. Arrogant (1988) or its close companion production The Great Space Coaster anthology specials, but most definitively, it is the Canadian-produced family feature film The Flight of the Albatross or the exact TV film Wings (1984/1985).
@Frank Apisa,
Thanks, but I've tried tracking this one down for a few weeks, and 3 AI gave me just about the same answers -- always "most definitely this movie / absolutely describes this one / the movie you're looking for is this", etc.
So far, none of them have panned out. But I'm sure someone has seen it, remembers the name, and eventually it will resurface. Must be out there, since I downloaded a digital copy years ago (that old external drive failed a few years back).
@Ragman,
Thanks. I saw that one. The one I'm looking for isn't a horror movie, it's definitely a family movie, and I think older than "Legion". Probably the 1980's, maybe 90's. I think there is no violence at all, just emotional drama; a close-knit family story. Either the mom or a baby sister is in hospital on the verge of death but in the end is saved by the "angel". One of the kids even ask him at one point if he's an angel, and he hesitates, then says, "Something like that..."
Skellig - The Owl Man! That's the one. Many thanks!
@Seizan,
I just remembered Tim Roth was in something like that.
@izzythepush,
Thanks again. With that name, I actually found it on YouTube, in full, with just tiny little subtitles at the bottom of the screen, in a European language. Started watching it last night, but it just got too late for movie-watching. Maybe tonight or this weekend.
@Seizan,
Can I have a ribbon please.
@izzythepush,
I have a little line of emoticons to use with a text here, but I don't see a ribbon.
Can I buy you a drink?
@Seizan,
at the top of your first post it says something along the lines of "choose best answer"...
@Region Philbis,
Ah, thanks -- went there, found that, did the thing...
