Woke up at 3:00 this morning and saw the Wolf moon. It was spectacular...bright as I have ever seen the moon...and seemingly huge. Jupiter was alongside it...itself very bright.
A plane had just passed through the area and left a highly lit contrail between the two.
A very moving sight.
@Frank Apisa,
You made me look. Bright, yes. Straight over head, which I don't think I've ever seen before.
It had been a week of cloudy skies here and the last time I viewed the moon was the First Quarter. It was a half circle with the round part down, reminding me of a boat, although not quite like Noyes's "ghostly galleon" as the skies were crystal clear. So I was also struck by appearance of the Wolf Moon last night – shining on a snow covered landscape it felt as bright as day!
OK, you both made me look. Yes, very bright and clear sky here. It would have been nice to watch it rise. That’s when it has the appearance of being even larger.

The fact that it was so high in the sky surprised me. I would have thought the plane of the orbit would show the moon much lower toward the south. I'm going to look into that.

Yeah. It looked almost as bright as day here also. I was surprised mostly because I thought I had heard that it was going to be cloudy.

Damn, everyone is thinking the same way here. I kept thinking that it must have looked huge when it was lower to the horizon. I planned to take a peek when it got closer to dawn, but slept through.
@Frank Apisa,
Tonight it’ll be 97% as full and assuming it’s a clear sky, just about as bright .
we saw it late yesterday afternoon, rising from the northeast.
quite a sight...
